What should I expect from Buck?

I am begining to wonder about quality control at Buck. Following is
what I found from my previous purchases.

110FG - Took 30 min. to clean it of some black gritty substance which
felt like sand when opening knife. Discovered I could put a
piece of 24# bond between the right bolster and open blade.

112FG - Blade is nowhere nearly centered in the handle when closed.
It almost touches one liner. This knife was also dirty, but
not nearly as bad as above.

102 - The guard is definately loose, and the handle probably is.

110 - This is a BUCKCOTE knife which has already been sent back and
returned for a non-centered, loose blade.

These were just my last four BUCK purchases. Should I be required to
send these back as I get them, save them for one massive return or am
I just being anal about my personal quality standards.

Please don't take this to mean that I've never gotten a satisfactory
knife from BUCK. Before the above four I found a 102 Stag that is
beautiful. I also discovered a 124 about 6 months ago that is real
high towrd the top of my favorite list (it's a short list).

I guess what I'm saying is that over the years, I've come to expect a
high level of quality from BUCK. Should I lower my expectations?

Sounds like you are a little anal, so welcome to the club. I can spot a scratch across the room. I send knives back for less, because I too expect hihg standards for my hard earned dollar. Over the years, BUCK has been outstanding in their efforts to fix my problems, and 99% of the time their QC is unequalled. IMHO, I would give them another chance to make it right.:p

My guess is that before too long Joe Houser should notice this and get in contact with you. If he does not, contact him and he will help you to take care of all of these problems.

As for myself, I have always found that the products that I have received from Buck were high quality. especially love the 560(not that that will get them out of making the 112TI)

I would love to find out that you are just being too picky, that would reaffirm my faith in the folks on the line. But, it might also be that you some legitamate comcerns. I would rather you send them in, to my attention, so that I can see, and fix them for you.
We do allow the blade to be slightly off centered in the case, as long as it does not contact the inside of the handle. The steel we use has a memory, and sometimes remembers that it was once on a coil. It is not very common but does happen.
The "dirt" is buffing compound, forced inside the case while the operator was buffing it. We used to have a great degrease operation that cleaned that all out. The EPA took care of that and now we have to wipe them by hand. I will take a look to make sure they do a better job.
I hope this helps,

Thanks for the quick reply Joe. I'll have them in the mail to you tomorrow.

Another thanks, Joe, for not sending someone over to my house to beat the living c**p out of me. I re-read my post and just wanted to crawl in a hole and cover it up. While not a bad student, I obviously failed tactfull communications 101. Please forgive me.

Mike

The answer to my original question is easy.

ONLY THE VERY BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE IN THE WORLD!!!

Received my knives back yesterday. They are beautiful. All were taken care of beyond my wildest expectations.

You and everyone at the company are the BEST.

My sincerest thanks.

Mike

Mike,
I am sure glad to hear that you like the knives and that they made it to you safe and sound! Thank you for the kind comments too, much appreciated.

Take care,

Buck makes very, very good knives.
Buck's knives are a very good value.
Buck Knives, the company and its people are THE BEST!

This is not just rah-rah rhetoric. I have been a Buck fan for a long, long time and my 20+/- year old Bucks are still in service. On those rare occaisions that I have had to deal with the Company, they have been the best!

My finances have changed over the years and I can afford more expensive knives, but it is hard to forget your first love. That's why I still go with Buck more times than not.

Mike

Really glad you were pleased by the response you got from Joe and his consumer relations folks. They do take their part seriously and get a real charge out of satisfying customers.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to make it right and for the kind comments.
