What should I get? by noobie

Hi Guys,

I do not know much about knife at all, just start to learn more about it.
I am looking to buy pocket knife for self defense purpose only and legal in California (automatic is not legal, I believe).

I have look into Kershaw Chive and Leek, but it seems that the handle design will not protect my fingers at if I have use it in the self defense situation.

Please give me some advice as to what I should look for,
in term of saftey, quality, durability, medium size like Leek.
I have the budget for few hundred dollars..........

Cali is crazy strict when it comes to weapons IIRC. check your local laws before proceeding. maybe some cali members here can give a quick synopsis of the laws. but anyways, i'd officially nominate the spyderco chinook II. it's grip is comfy, light enough for me, slim enough for me, and it's lock can't be beat (MBC rated). another winner is spyderco's gunting. both of these blades won't make you an instant expert. you must train with them with qualified instructors before you hurt yourself. stay safe.
