What should I get? fallkniven f1 vs CRK Nyala vs Bark River Gunny

I have a CRK Nyala and I really like it. But after doing further research, the fallkniven f1 is a very impressive all around survival knife. Is it better than the Nyala? What do you guys prefer? The F1 is also cheaper too. I don't know much about steels, but I think I prefer VG-10 over S35vn. My goal is just to have one mid size all around survival knife. Thanks

Added: What about a Bark River Gunny?

Or the F1/3G, it´s a F1 with laminated Powder steel, it holds an edge about 4 times better than the Lam.VG10.
But sure the regular F1 will do for most tasks, but if you want the best F1/3G is it!

If the 3G version of the F1 holds an edge 4 times longer than the VG-10 version, color me impressed. I've whittled with a factory edged F1 (VG-10) all day long and not dulled it any considerable amount. The Japs know what they are doing with VG-10 that's for sure.

I really like my Fallkniven F1... It's a great bush knife and just begs to be used hard. Built like a little tank.

If you get the Falkniven F1 with a Micarta handle and a leather sheath, like the CRK Nyala comes equipped, you'll likely spend more than you would for the US-made Nyala. And... you'd have a knife made in Japan. You can circumvent that by going to knivesshipfree.com - they have the Japaneese-made F1 VG-10 blades handled in MI's UP by Bark River Knives - and US-made leather sheaths fitted - for a bit more than the CRK Nyalas. The two knives are basically the same size, shape, thickness, and weight. The Nyala is S35VN; the F1 is laminated VG-10. I have a VG-10 blade on my Kershaw #1993-2 Gentleman's Folder - but it is advertised as made in Japan. I like S30V & S35VN better - longer lasting fine edge and it re-edges more easily than my one VG-10 example.

I've had my Nyala for over 14 months - it's a keeper! Here it is with another South African knifemaker's design - but this one is made in Bethlehem, South Africa - an Arno Bernard 'Wild Dog' in Bohler N690 steel and spalted maple handles on the tapered tang. The sheath is cape buffalo leather. I've since added another one - with giraffe bone handles - same price - shipped they are slightly less than the Nyala. They have an interesting selection of South African handle materials, too. Great example of an affordable custom handmade knife.

Thanks for all the input. Everyone was saying F1, then comes Stainz, Nyala! :) So which knife do you guys think is tougher?

I don't have the Nyala but I do have the F1/Bark River handle knife mentioned above and it is an absolute keeper. Love this knife to pieces although at some point I may look at getting a custom kydex sheath for it rather than the leather.

Depending on how you define "mid size", you might also want to look at the Fallkniven S1 which is slightly bigger than the F1 and made of the same steel. I need to take photos of the rest of my knives and will try and post the relevant ones here later. (Just finished a 12 hour shift at work and need sleep)

Never seen a Nyala except on the Internet, but I think the F1 is so popular for good reason. But get what you want. You'll end up with both eventually anyway. Welcome to the sickness. ;)

The Fallkniven S1 looks great. A little bigger but only 6.7oz not too bad. I'll definitely consider it. Thanks

I just went ahead and ordered a fallkniven f1 too ;) I will compare them and see which I will keep. Damn, now I'm thinking about a Bark River Gunny.....how does it compare?
