My husband is a knife fanatic, and he's really into Balisong. I'm in a Christmas crisis because I dont know just which one to get him. Any suggestions with price range and where to find them would be of much help.

<A HREF="http://www.benchmade.com/index.htm">Benchmade Model 42 Bali-Song</A>

About $100-$160.

Pretty low price <A HREF="http://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-CustomListProducts?Benchmade%20Butterfly%20Knives,2,16,=,bm,&,60,=,butterfly">here</A>...

Availible at most online knife stores, I suppose, including this one(1SKS), but I don't think they can get it to you before Christmas.

Any local stores near you?

Get him a BM42 if he doesn't already have one. Price range for a BM42 is around $110. You can get one at: www.1sks.com

If the BM42 is out of your price range, go with a Jaguar or a rostfrei bali. You can get those at around $12-$30. You can get these from John, at: www.balisongknife.com If you're going to go with the Jaguar, I recommend the silver slotted one (kind of a tan color [it's on John's website]). If you want one of the rostfreis, I recommend the silver wave design one or the silver dragon one.

Hope this helps -

Dragon makes a good point.. I don't think there is any chance you can get a BM42 before Christmas, unless you got it from a private dealer. If you go with John (www.balisongknife.com), you have nothing to worry about.

I agree, the BM 42 is a must for any fanatic. I suggest you check Yahoo Auctions for one because it's probably the only way to get one before x-mas. I have gotten 2 BM 42's from Archery128 on there. Both transactions were really quick, less than a week both times. He usually has a few up for grabs.

Dragon1, I am about 80 miles from Reno, Nevada. In my local area I have a choice of either WalMart or WalMart.

If you really want to get this man something special and if you're willing to spring for a bit more, I might suggest that there are still a few unnumbered Geminis available. Keep in mind that these probably won't be delivered until late next year. But, you can give him a place in line. The whole story is one (and linked to) my web site right on the first page.

Yeah, but there's no price mentioned on a balisong, which we would not get until Feb 2001 or later--would GerberGal's Hubby want to wait that long? Your page only mentions a $100 deposit. Just how much is this baby gonna cost? $1000, $2000? Darrel Ralph's knives are very nice, but I had to pry teeth to get a qoute out of him

It would be nice if he was just up front with the pricing.

Search the online knife stores to see if they have any in stock:
www.1sks.com
www.888knivesrus.com
www.knifezilla.com
www.butterflyknifeexchange.com
www.northwestcutlery.com
www.mjsknives.com (I'm not sure if this link will work, I'm going off of memory here)
and check out bladeforums.com's auctions to see if someone has any up. Good luck!!

My site does not give pricing, true. The money is handled by Mr. Ralph's dealer, The Edge Equipment. The link is at the end of my article. If you go there, they have a very well-formulated menu from which you select the options you want, press OK and it gives you a firm price.

The base price on a Gemini is about $350, which is a great price for a Darrel Ralph custom. Of course, you can go a lot higher depending on what "optional extras" you have installed. I'm having a few "optional extras" installed on mine, but that's a different thread.

As for the wait, our friend Mrs. GerberGal, will have to judge her husband's reaction to being given a place in line for a knife that might not come for a year vs. something he can hold in his hand immediately. If her husband is a collector of custom knives, he is probably well familiar with "the waiting." If he's more of an "instant total gratification" sort of guy, well, then the 42 is probably the way to go.

Think W!

BM42 from "the cutlery shoppe" it sells for $112.00 and you get a BM torx wrench set for free!

It is all Greek to me

$350 for a base Darrel Ralph sounds very reasonable and well worth it, based on his rep. Would there be any chance I could get a Gemini by at least June?

I have steadfastly said that there are no promised delivery dates. Either you want it or you don't.
