What size AK?

Hey guys i'm looking to buy a nice sized Ang Khola.
I'm leaning t'wards something at least 18 inches, but the main trait of this khukuri has to be that it will cut through what ever I put in front of it. From simple kinlding (may use my ever arriving WW2 for this ) lumber down to splitting tree sections for firewood.

I'd be willing to go up as high as 26 inches.

Keep in mind i don't have any experience with AK's and am just looking for the proper size for me.

Is bigger the way to go? or would a 15"-20" AK fill this job?

Go look in the HI vs Battle Mistress thread. There's a picture of the BM next to a 20" AK that might help you with perspective.

I use my 25" AK to split firewood into kindling. It handles seasoned oak and almond with no problem, and sails through most pine like it wasn't even there. However, it's too heavy and cumbersome to take hiking, at least in my opinion. An 18" AK should handle most anything, and if you're willing to carry a little extra weight, the 20" should be an even better chopper.

18" AK, all the way....(rhymes too...:D)

Check out Seth's monster thread. A 20"+ AK really is too big for "all around" use. They're best for chopping only.

Bruce?

How big of a man are you? Danny in Japan has been reported to be 12 feet and 900 pounds. Obviously, he could heft bigger blades.

I'm 5'8" and er..(dammit) 180 pounds...I use a 15 in, could probably deal with an 18 in.

Munk seems to do the most actually wood-for-heat cutting. Think he uses an 18, but check with him.

I"m 5"9 and a bit of a weight lifter.

Weight isn't really a concern with me, I will adapt.

Leanin' t'ward a 20 incher now, think that' the way to go.

Another fan of the 18" AK, all the way. I use mine regularly while camping. BTW, I am 6 foot tall, and only 160lbs. I am reasonably fit, but not anywhere near what I want to be.

If you get a 20 incher now you will be getting an 18" later.:p ;)
Really Bruce, the 17" to 18" khuks @ around 28-30 ounces are the best all around khuks going unless you're a giant as they take less effort to use.
