What size do you recommend for a set of bench stones? I will most likely be getting DMT Diamond stones, but want a good Arkansas fine stone as well. I currently have a Lansky set, a Smith's Tri-Stone set 6 x 1 5/8", and a Norton 11 1/2 x 2 1/2" India Coarse/Fine stone.

Knives I sharpen range from a Vic Classic, up through a Ratmandu or Kabar USMC Fighting Knife, with the majority being Traditional pocket knives. Most are carbon steel, with a few Spyderco and Benchmade higher end stainless steels.

Thanks

That Norton stone you mention is all I need. Large enough size to handle anything and does a good job. DM

Most of my knives are 3" to 4" blades and I do OK with 6" stones. If I sharpened bigger knives more, I think I'd want at least 8" stones.

As Dave said, the Norton should take care of most every thing. Mine does. Have you thought about getting a Spyderco ceramic (fine or extra fine)? I use one to further refine my VG10 and S30V blades after using the fine side of my Norton.
