What size knife do ya seem to use the most when outdoors, for me a blade of between 5" and 6" seems to work the best.
A blade of this size is large enough to get some serious work done and yet still small enough for finer tasks.
Here is a pic of my 5"-6" blades, the TOPS Tracker only just makes the group as it's right at the upper limit !

Err, what do I use most? To be honest, a blade of 9" or longer. Now, I do more chopping and batoning then anything else, as that is a good stress reliever, and it is fun. Now, if it were a trip of a few days, I'd likely be using a 5-7 inch knife most, but still be chopping/batoning stuff up. :)

The privilege to build a fire in California is one that is rarely granted (The rainy season is just now starting, and burn bans have yet to be lifted in the areas that I haunt). Thus, I rarely need to process any wood for a fire. That mostly leaves food and game prep. My camp food generally consists of some sort of freeze dried meals and energy bars if hiking, and some sort of easily prepared- but not necessarily light- food if car camping. I find that field processing a deer is easiest with a slim and pointy knife in the 3 inch range. As most of my outdoor activities find me in a situation where the only need I have for a knife is to cut up a downed deer, a caping knife gets most of my use outdoors.

There are some areas where we can burn a fire while camping, and for camping there I like to have my scrap yard dogfather along.

Sheath knife... 4 - 4.5" Pocket knife... 3 - 4" I have a couple of neckers too...

I have been gravitating towards smaller, less bulky knives lately. My BRKT Aurora is great and sees the most use but I've been finding even that at 4.5" long is just a little more than needed. Just got a 4" highland special and it feels like the most comfortable and useable blade in the arsenal. Thinking about getting a liten bror too which is the same size as the F1 but a very different design and geometry.

Really, half the fun is buying and fooling around with it and seeing what works. Haven't seen the need to whip out the chopweiler yet although the fallkniven a1 did see use last weekend.

BK2 gets the most use of all. Tough enough to do the dirty work and elegant enough to do the fine work. From baton hemlock knots to fuzz cedar, my BK2 has been there and done that. I love all my knives, but honestly, my BK2 is my goto knife. If I could only choose one, it would be my BK2.

Good question pit, you tha man.

I still love the look of these, they are so ' all work and no frills ' eh, great looking blades !

Since I work in an urban environment, a pocket edc gets a lot of use. Outdoors I use a 4-5 inch blade, not too big of a fan of larger knives. Although I have always wanted an ESEE Junglas!

I use a 3 inch blade most. When it's not the little one, it's the 10 inch blade.

You should get you one, they don't cost much, and you get a whole lotta knife for the money. Let me know if you wanna test one out, I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the offer buddy but I don't need to borrow one to know I'd like one, I'll just have to add one to my wishlist !;)

I carry in the 9"-10" Range, only because of California's gun laws, so there is an element of self defense I am concerned with.

I never carry just one , but usually my Esee 4. Does everything I need a knife to do.

I also tend to use smaller fixed blades as well- most in and around the 3" mark

for food prep, fire prep, cleaning fish/foul/game I find this the handiest size, it also makes carry easy too (small & light)

I see you still have'nt used your RMD yet Pit .... keeping it for Sunday best still ??? :D:D

I agree though on the size range .... that is what I like to carry on my belt .... I sometimes have something bigger in a rucksack .... do you use your Chopweiler like that ?

Throughout the winter months I use my Chopweiler every day for making small tinder for the woodstove. Other than that the only time I really use it is when I go camping ! Awesome blade though !!!

for me, its depend on the thick of the jungle.
usually I carry my F1 (4" blade) and a machete (18" blade) or my RAT 7 if just for hunting or fishing

My most used size for general tasks is the 5" blade fixed blade on average.

But if I'm out and gonna be doing any shelter building etc. Then either my Kukri or one of my 10" blades will go along for the heavy stuff. Gravitating mostly to my 10" chopper in 52100 from Tad Lynch for the heavy stuff lately.

Just picked up one of the KSF Scagels by BRKT today and look forward to giving it a workout this week.

For me a 4-5" is the best option althoug I prefer 3 1/2 to 4". The smaller blades just seem more manageable and they are faster to sharpen in the field. I also prefer 1/8" thickness.

This one was the 2nd knife I made and has a 3" blade:

In the past few years I've used it to field dress two moose, two whitetails (one was caped & quatered), a mulie, ~ 2 dozen sockeye, and a few black bears. I like it so much I finally got around to making myself a new one that is a similar shape/size:

This one is CPM 3 V with osage scales. I used it to dress, quarter, and cape my antelope a couple weeks ago:
