I'm planning on getting a ferro rod to keep inside my HEST's handle but it's at home so can't measure it. Can anyone tell me what size rod will fit inside the HEST handle? thanks,

I question for HEST owners, let´s say, the knife is the only thing I have with me, and I am in a survival situation in the wilderness and I need to make fire.
How do I remove the micarta slabs if I don´t have some tool with me? So I can get that ferro rod/firesteel that is stored in the handle. Did I miss something here?
It seems nearly impossible to remove those slabs without tools...

It comes with washers that you put on your lanyard that serve as screwdrivers to remove the slabs.

Not my image, but it illustrates my comment...

Oh, now I see. Very neat! Many thanks!! Now I don´t know how much longer i can resist this knife...

Sweet. I need to get a good misch to put inside mine, and maybe a P-38. Not sure why the P-38... just think that would be a good addition.

I'm going for a ferro rod, sewing needle and thread, a couple of alcohol prep pads(if i can't start a fire with a ferro rod and alcohol soaked cotton there's something wrong with me) and i'll see what else i have room for. I'm going to try and get at least 10-15 feet of cord into a lanyard and put the washer and a whistle on the lanyard. I'm just waiting on my order from going gear before i can get everything together.

Sounds good, but you'll get a little more "bang for your buck" if you wrap the sheath with 15' of 550 instead of a tightly-wrapped lanyard - it'll be less kinked when you need it and you'll not have a Rapunzel's hair-length lanyard sticking out off the handle... unless that's the look you're looking for.

I, personally, like having a looped lanyard to slip my hand in, not a keychain type.

I was planning on fatter rather than longer for the lanyard but you have a good point about it being all kinked up

Got the P-38 today and put one in the HEST hideaway. Just need to get a misch metal rod now.

Aside from a washer, you'd have to improvise...the zipper on your pants could turn a HEST screw..an old bottlecap..

Or you could use your other HEST! I always travel with two cuz its amazing what you can swap for a sexy knife.
