i'm more than half way done with the grinder i'm making and i plan to support it with 1 1/2" plywood screwed down to my 1" thick plywood floor and i was wondering what size lag bolts should i use to bolt it down good, and how lond should they be? i have 4-1" holes in my pedistal base. should i use lock washers, along with the regular washers?

Those 1 inch holes in your base are kind of big, you don't that big a lag. You might want to shim the inside of the hole with flat washers then use a fender washer under the head of a 3/8 lag.

I would consider using rubber mounts in those big 1" mounting holes. It should keep vibrition from transmitting to the floor. They should be firm rubber I think. 1/2" bolts are strong enough. Bruce
ps. Did you buy that pyrometer?

Waht kind of floor is it? Regular plywood, or is that particle board they use for the subfloor in houses? Regular lag bolts will probably take a pretty good bite in normal plywood. I would find something with more threads per inch for the particle board. It has a very hard surface but tears out easily because there isn't really any grain strucure to bite into. Finer threads would tear less going in, and there would be more threads to hold it in. The best thing for either type of floor would be to use regualr hex head bolts that go clear through the floor and tighten it down with washers and lock nuts. That way the vibration can't work anything loose. And you can tighten it more because rather than pull out it just squeezes everything together tighter.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

sorry guys, i changed my mind, my dad suggsted that i cut a hole in the floor, and dig a hole for a concrete column 2ft.x 2ft. and 2' deep from the ground down. so i'm gonna do that instead. and i'll mount the pedistal base to that. i can still use your idea's for other machines though, thanks.
bruce, the forge slowed down a little bit, i haven't had time to work on it, but i'm glad you told me about it, because i'm gonna use the same pyrometer as you have, thanks.
matt, my regular floor is plywood, not particle board. that's a good tip about the bolts, instead of lags, since i can slide my hand under my shop to do that i'll use that tip for other machines.
