I'm making a mag pouch for a buddy and have 2 different sizes of leather, 4-5oz and 7-9oz.

Is there one that would be preferably better for my project?

The mag pouch will be one that is able to be carried IWB and OWB

Thanks!

Well for what it`s worth, I just made a open top pancake style mag pouch out of 8-9 oz. I thought it turned out good if you don`t mind stitching thick layers.

That's what I've done in the last and it turned out a bit bulky for me. My buddy is a bigger guy and will use it frequently so I want something that will be durable and last but not overly big and clumsy.

I haven't made a pouch out of the 4-5oz before so I'm not sure how well it will last compared to the 7-9

If you were using 4-5oz, it would need to be double layered, so your right back to 8-10. Play with your pattern to minimize bulk best you can. Skive on stitched portion of the fold over so it sits nicely against the users body. I use 8 oz for anything like this.

Beautiful work there.

That's what I was thinking. I may end up using a kydex insert for added strength on the 4-5 and see what happens. If I don't own a skiver, what will be the best approach to doing that?

Thanks!

I don't own a skiver either, all your trying to do is thin down the end in a progressive fashion so that you don't have a bit fat tab of leather on the backside of the pouch. Use a razor blade and go slow. Sander would even work but it would be very slow and you'll enjoy the smell of burning leather. It's easier to do when your hand stitching on little items like that, when accounting for the sewing machine you have to do things with enough clearance to use it.
