what size of pins to use for handle

im going to rehandle a heavy chopping knife with micarta, need to know what size of pins to use, the tang is 5/16'' thick and 5/8 wide and also should I use brass or something else, any help would be appreciated

I usually use 1/8 brass pins for most knives. If you have never peened before then a benefit is that they are big enough to really see what you're doing.

thank you for your help, I had in mind to use 3/16 but didn't know if that would be to big

It doesn't matter in the least. Some people use 1/8; some use 1/4. Go with what you think looks good. I like small pins--I use 1/8 brass.

thanks for your help I didn't know how much metal you needed to have left on each side of the pin that's why I was asking the tang is only 5/8 wide
