Thought a poll would be kinda cool. What do you you think the most important skill is when out in the woods. Of course I mean survival skill. If lost, and you have a good PSK kit with axe (or large blade) 4" belt knife and standard PSK kit what skill is best to have mastered. Me, fire. Fire is the one that has the most variables to it (many different way so make it).

Just thought it wold be different.

Fire would be the most immediate skill to use for survival. After fire, water procurement and treatment would be the most important.

Cold will kill you faster than most things, and that is why fire is #1.
Dehydration is the next most life threatening thing, so getting and treating water would be #2. Having a metal cup and a means of holding water are just as important as having a knife (yes, I said it). Knowing how to improvise without cups and canteens can be invaluable.

Fire. It shocks me how many people cannot do what humans have been doing since the beginning of time, yet know the complete history of britney spears.

It's been written before and I forget what book it was (I think it was Bushcraft) a bowl or a cup can be just as important as a knife or axe.

I'd have to say #1fire
#2 shelter
#3 water
#4 perfecting my "woodsmans daughter call" there's more then 1 way to stay warm

For me the best skill is the ability to improvise. I agree knives and firemaking is very important, but finding creative uses for what is around you is tops in my book.

Yeah....Especially if my wife finds out....JK LOL

Fire, to be sure.

warms
signals
purifies water
cooks food
keeps bad four-legs away
helps build tools
good for morale

How many survival situations start out with people getting lost. Without getting lost they get back to their car and drive home, no need to build a shelter. IMO, navigation is number 1 -- stay found. As for the times when a survival situation comes up and getting lost isn't an issue, then shelter is first followed closely by an ability to make fire. $.02 FWIW

I was wondering when someone would come up with this thought. I agree...

As with all of these polls/questions it boils down to the intent of the question.
This one already assumes you are lost.
"If lost, and you have a good PKS....."

1. Fire
2. Shelter
3. Water
and so on.....

Once you are warm, sheltered and hydrated, then start on the orienteering your way outta dodge.

Good poll.

Some. Some start out with someone finding themselves in water over their heads or attempting to "fly." A specific set if facts influences the answer as to the "most important" skill. Building a shelter certainly could be No. 1 -- or navigation -- or being able to attarct the attention of that other boat before you sucumb to hypothermia and drown.

How about the first thing to do is stay cool and level headed. Many people that know nothing about survival did come out alive for no other reason but level headed thinking. You never realy know what awaits you. After that i would take fire.

I also voted for navigation skills with that mindset. I have fire as 2 with this mentality, however if the situation dictates you have great navigational skills yet and tragedy befell you, then FIRE would be my #1.
