What small cheapish folding hunter?

I have been carrying a fixed blade on my belt, but this year I think I would like to get a folder...anyone have any recommendations?

I'm thinking a Buck 110 would do nicely. Even comes with a sheath.

Check out the Spyderco Native at Walmart. I took the clip off mine and use it as a more traditional pocket knife and it would be great for hunting or general cutting chores. It is large enough to put a lot of pressure on it if necessary when cutting, small enough for the detail work such as field dressing a deer, and fits in the pocket nicely. Walmart has a fairly large selection of Bucks and Gerbers typically. Have used the Gerber Gator in the past. It is a knife I use when I don't care if I damage the blade.

I also sometimes carry a Remington Bullet knife. It has field dressed my last two deer. Almost any Case that fits your hand will be good too in a canoe or skinner type design. Lots of choices, but I would look at the Native before making a decision. They run about $40.

Other possibilities include a Swiss Army knife (SAK) such as a Tinker ($16-$20). It is a bit small for hunting. I like the Soldier model ($20). Good size and flat in the pocket. I carry the larger Locksmith SAK daily ($40) as it is good for many day to day chores. I generally don't use them in a hunting situation though, but they would work just fine.

if you still want a belt knife then you can't go wrong with the buck 110. as far as just a new edc then the spyderco native, kershaw leek, kershaw storm 2. there's a lot out there for not too much money. later, ahgar

Lots of alternatives to the 110, but you'd be hard pressed to find a sturdier lock back folder. Mine has served me since 1978 and is as solid as ever. Great knife.

Take a look at the Ka-Bar Dozier folders. There is a whole set of them with the same handle shape but variations in the blade. You can't beat them for design or quality or price for a lightweight utility or hunter.

Reading the thread title made me think the exact same thing Esav, it is a great knife for the buck.

I gave one to my work hardened Lead hand mechanic(Boss) last year, he cant say enough good about it, nor can i of mine.

Dont overlook this inexspensive worker, so cheap if lost or given away to iniate a new knife collector it wont hurt. Then get the Benchamdes, Spyderco ect...Need a dress knife ect...

Peace

Gerber makes some nice "cheap" blades that carry light and work well.
I've used the Gerber LST Lr. for a lightweight, small field dressing knife and it held up well against wild turkey.

It'll do more than a $15 knife should do.

If you'd like to spend a little more than $15, I'd look at the Spyderco Centofante, or Endura. Both are less than $50.

I agree with Esav, the Kabar-Doziers are hard to beat for the money--and they are very affordable.

But if you want to step it up a notch or two and spend a little more loot, then I recommend the Benchmade Griptilian and Mini-Griptilians.

Good luck,
Allen.

Benchmade Pika and Mini-Pika are worth a look. Nothing wrong with Griptilians either, but the simpler lockback mechanism of the Pika is easier to clean.
