Simple question to Mr. Glesser and everyone at the Spyderco company.

What Spyderco do you EDC and why?

Not part of Spyderco, but...

I think the answer to this one for Sal is "many and varied", he carries any of the prototypes Spyderco is developing at the time. We had a competition on this once:D.

Kristi likes the ATR, but not sure on anyone else.

I had heard at one time that Joyce's favorite Spyder was the Massad Ayoob. But I have not heard about anyone's carrying preferences. I think I did hear once that Sal's favorite fixed blade is the Temperance. That would make sense because I am pretty certain that is one of his designs.

It would be interesting to know what the folks at the Great Spyder Factory carry. JD

Hi Marthinus,

Most of the crew have their own preferences. The knifemakers in Golden will generally carry something made in Golden.

I'm usually carrying and testing a new design, prototype or refinement of an existing design. I also will carry the early pieces of a new model.

We're always refining designs. Eric and I have to test them.

Around salt water, I'll carry a salt. Travelling overseas, I'll usually carry a UKPK. In cities, I try to be aware of local laws on size and type. Delica and Caly3 are good urban pieces.

I quess that is one of the advatages for Mr. Glesser and everyone working at Spyderco. Can test out all the new products! He He :)

But I have to ask Mr. Glesser when you brought out the Delica snd Endura as the first Spyderco knives did you ever think that Spyderco would grew to such a large company offering so many "reliable high performance" knives/products and does the delica and endura still have that "special" place in your hart?

Hi Marthinus,

We'd been making Clipits almost 10 years before we designed the Endura and Delica. Although they have been continually refined for more than 15 years.

O my.... I did not know that. Sorry Mr. Glesser. I am still quite new to Spyderco and do not know the companys history all to well. My first spyderco was given to me the 1ste of March this year and I only started reading up on Spyderco since then. Goes to show you: You learn Something new every day.

Anyway. Thank you for the great products you make.

Ps. What was the first knife brought out by spyderco?

I think it was the "Worker". Visit the following page for all you need to know about it.

Hi Marthinus,

no problem.

As Darthsoaker mentioned, we intoduced the first Clipit "worker" model in 1981. It was the first knife with a hole-opener in the blade to open the knife with one hand. It was also the introduciton of the "pocket clip", hence the name "clipit". It was a "mid-lockback", a lock popularized by Al mar and Harvey McBurnette.

Serrations came a year later on the "Mariner" model.

By the time we designed the Endura and Delica, we'd learned quite a bit more about knife design. You could say the "heritage" or "ancestry" of the Endura and Delica are evident in the prior models (Worker, Mariner, Hunter, Executive, Harpy and CoPilot). We'd also learned about things like "plastic" handles from Blackie Collins and Gerber.

This may be a stupid question, but do you ever carry or use another companies' or custom makers' knife for other purposes than to simply compare or get ideas from?

jtallant,

I have read that most knife companies do this kind of thing regularly. If I am not mistaken, the folks at Spyderco have carried Benchmade knives, among others, and purposely broken them during testing to see what they would stand up to.

good thread

i always wondered what Mr. Glesser and the other folks over at Spyderco carried

Thank you for the link. It was a VERY interesting read and it surely gave me more insight into Spyderco. The fact that Mr. Glesser emphisise the importance of the end user creates even more respect than I had before reading that!

Mr Glesser and everyone else at Spyderco surely take great pride in their company, work, products, and costumers and I must say. That means a lot for me as person.

Thank you Spyderco!

Thank you Spyderco!

It's "UK Ken"'s website. I don't know if he's on this forum, but he is on the Spyderco's official forum.

We do take a lot of pride in working for Sal and Gail. Spyderco is a special place to be.

As for me, it varies day to day and it can change if I'm traveling. At my Military shows, I will usually carry prototypes of models suited for the needs of the people I see.

Today though... Pink Delica, ATR SS SE, Ocelet PS and a Lil Temperance.

I just wanted to say +1 on that.

Spyderco is also still supporting the passarounds for something like over three years!

He carries any one he damn well pleases!:D

Just a little humor. This is a good topic.

Thanks,
