What steel for 1st Blur?

So I will be getting my first Blur soon and I would like to hear some opinions on what steel to get it in. Should I get the standard blur? Or upgrade to s30v or cpm154? Part of me thinks I should invest in the cheaper steel because I'm not sure if I will like the knife, but I've read quite a few reviews and everyone seems to like the blur, so perhaps investing a little bit more would be worth it? Thoughts?

I think you should start off with the "lower-end" steel first, and than work your way up the ladder to the more higher end steels. That way you can get a good feel for the knife and get used to it.

I agree, I am doing the same actually. Going to order mine tomorrow. Good luck.

I'll have to agree with Knotty. The standard steel is actually a pretty nice quality steel IMHO.

14c28n is a good steel. Gets sharp quick and easy, holds a decent edge too. Honestly I wouldn't really call it lower end. Its definetly above 8cr on the overseas knives in my humble opinion. If you decided you needed a higher end steel, I will recomend one in the cpm-154 as I prefer it over s30v. Both are good knives though, and you get either a carbonfiber handle or a limited spyder web handle with the cpm-154 over th e trac tec black on the s30v.

I would venture to say that 14C28N is probably one of the best steels out on the market, at least in my experiences with it. It's really easy to sharpen, but it holds a very good edge and gets stupid sharp.

Steels aside, the carbon fiber blur feel is level above the others.

Sandvik would be a good base steel to know.

Thanks or the advice. I think I will go with the 14c28n. I can always get another. Just spent the last hour or so going through the "show me your blur" thread. Oh God! I had no idea what I was getting myself into. There are some diehard blur collectors out there.

One other detail... The new Sandvik blades are all hollow ground vs. flat ground on the S30V and CPM154 blades (see this thread). All three are great steels. You will get better wear resistance with S30V and CPM154, but the Sandvik will take just as fine an edge.

If you just want to try a Blur to see if you like it, pick up a blem from kershawguy. Heck, you can pick up a blem green spider web Blur with CPM-154 steel for just a little more than typical retail for a regular Blur (Sandvik steel). For a little more than that, you can get the blem carbon fiber one (also CPM-154).

Pics of the two different grinds. Top is the hollow-ground being used on the newer Blurs w/ Sandvik steel. Bottom is the flat grind used on the S30V and CPM154 Blurs.

If you're not sure your going to like it, best to start off with a 14c28n. Although, if you have a few Kershaws you might already have 14c28n and you might want to try one of the higher end steels. From all the positive reviews, its a beloved knife. And if its not for you, its not like you won't be able to sell it quickly on the exchange. I don't have one yet but its on my list, I will be starting with the cpm154 as I do have a few other knives in both s30v and 14c28n but none in cpm154.
