Hi guys: Does anyone know what is the best steel for Trace Rinaldi's Armageddon big knife? CPMS30V or CPM3V? If anyone out there own one what is your input? I placed an order with Les,he told me should has one by early part of next year. Thanks

Hi M4C,

I also plan on ordering an Armageddon one of these days...I will DEFINITELY order it in 3V...from what I understand, 3V is one of the toughest steels out there (and suitable for a big chopper) and from my experience, I haven't been that impressed with S30V (I own two S30V blades).

I OWN a CPM 3V model. In an all out full tilt monster blade, what other steel is there? ;)

That being said, there are many great steels to choose from in this style of blade. You can argue all sorts of qualities of one steel versus another but, in a tough situation I'll take CPM 3V everytime. Now, if I am off on my own for many months in some remote jungle with no tools to maintain my edge, etc., my choice would be different. For my urban and farm rural adventures, I sharpen up before I go and use whatever I find along the way to prevent rust as required.

I also own a THR TUK model in CPM S30V. It has taken everything I could dish out without complaint.

Care to explain a little more?

Hi Sid: How do you like yours in CPM3V? Can you tell me how much you paid for in CPM3V? I know Trace listed $450 for base model/A2? Since Trace is not taking any order right now. I ordered one thru Les(Robertson Cutlery)he did not give me a quote on S30V or 3V because the knife won't be avaiable until next year. I am a little concern about rust in CPM3V because in the past I had a knife in 440A stainless and it rusted & pitted very bad I had to spent a few days to get the rust off but the pit stay on the blade that's why I am considering the S30V. Any comments? Thanks, Andy

M4C,
I would go with Les's recommendation of 3V.
What Les said :D

How do you like yours in CPM3V?
I have found THR blades to be excellant users that are well thought out in their design. This is my best monster blade.

Can you tell me how much you paid for in CPM3V?
You could also ask Les ;)

It would not be appropriate for me to comment specifically on what I paid then and what they cost now. The marketplace is much different now so, I'm not sure past prices are helpful today. I have seen A2 models trade in the secondhand market for what I believe is the current retail price. Add the current order situation and they are probably worth more.........where's that picture of the fuzzy cloudy crystal ball :)

I know Trace listed $450 for base model/A2?
Web-site prices can be miss leading. Some knifemakers don't update their web-site very often so, I always check for a "date" on it to get a feel for whether the price posted is still a reasonable expectation on my part.

Since Trace is not taking any order right now. I ordered one thru Les(Robertson Cutlery)he did not give me a quote on S30V or 3V because the knife won't be avaiable until next year.
That seems like a reasonable thing for him to do. I have purchased a few knives from him and always received great service, a fair price, and what I expected.

I am a little concern about rust in CPM3V because in the past I had a knife in 440A stainless and it rusted & pitted very bad I had to spent a few days to get the rust off but the pit stay on the blade that's why I am considering the S30V.

Rust hasn't been a problem for me but, if you rusted stainless steel to the point it pitted, I would buy a cheap carbon steel knife first and work on my basic blade maintanence skills.

Any comments? Thanks, Andy
At this point, I think we need to know a little about your background, intended use, etc. to put things in the proper perspective to be a true help in you decision.

Are you on a commercial fishing boat, in the Amazon jungle, Iraq, etc.? Is this knife going to be a real user or a display piece? What sort of use will this knife see?..........

Hi Sid: Thanks for your comments. I will mainly use the Armageddon on camping/hunting trips in Northern Ca where it could get pretty wet. That's why I thought S30V would be a better choice. Is the CPM3V rust easy? Thanks

CPM S30V should give you all the performance you need and will add some rust resistance properties that will make it more forgiving for your use.

CPM 3V does not rust easily by my standards. I don't soak it in water and leave it in the sheath either so, I may not be testing its rust properties. If it's wet, I wipe it off. If the sheath is wet, I let it dry out first. For your use, this doesn't sound like a practical approach.

As mentioned above, I have a THR blade in CPM S30V that is serving me well. I think you will be best served by CPM S30V in your application.
