I was customizing a griptilian on Benchmades site and was thinking about going with the M680 steel over the S30V or D2, those are the three choices they offer. Price is not really an issue as its small difference in price. what would you guys choose for a good EDC folder out of the 3 ?

S30V for sure. Honestly though, if you want a s30v griptilian, just get a Ritter. The blade shape on the Ritter is far superior to the standard grip in my opinion. That is of course unless you're set on a particular color combo not available on the Ritter.

Ill assume m680 is a typo, and you mean m390 and in that case its superior, otherwise id pick s30v
Yes, M680 is a typo, but not for m390. It is N680 not M680 that is an option on the build-a-grip site. N680 is decent steel, and is extremely corrosion resistant if memory serves me right, but is not on the same level as d2 or s30v.

True, N690co is very similar to VG-10 (a very slight step down in edge retention from S30V or D2) N680 sacrifices a little more edge retention but you get even better rust resistance (in comparison to N690co), so if rust resistance and ease of sharpening is more important to you than edge retention go with N680, if edge retention is more important to you go with S30V.

thanks guys, thats kind of what I figured but I read some post about S30V having a chipping problem and Im just not real familiar with N680. Maybe I will take your advice and get a Ritter although I had one looking sweet with Toxic green handles and all black bade, screws and clip I was real close to ordering.

Nothing wrong with 154CM. It keeps a decent edge and isn't brittle.
Personally, I would rather have a Benchmade in 154CM. In fact, I have 3.

154Cm is good steel, Easy to sharpen. If you have the stones to do some of the designer steels go for what ever suits your fancy. Too bad they don't offer the "Grip blade in 1095. I would be all over it. Any of those above steels are fine. Some just take longer to get the proper edge on.

i would pick either D2 or S30V. if the knife won't see much of a corrosive environment, i would probably take D2. for me, D2 takes a finer edge, and more easily.

if corrosion resistance is very important to you, get the N680.

I'm putting an S30V griptillian through it's paces now. It replaced a 154CM 550. The one I have now is the tanto point. I'll say this for the 154CM version. It's one of only 2 or 3 knives I've sharpened that would get a hair whittling edge off just my 220/1000 grit combo waterstone.

Hahaha, I was going to order the same color combo....was looking the other day for when I save the money! Love it! Just have not ever had experience with Grip at all, but I am reading that it is a great blade.

When S30V was first introduced, several companies had problems with their blade chipping. They would chip while cutting, and even on the sharpening stone. Several causes were put forth, the 2 most likely seeming to be that it took some time to get the heat treatment for this new steel dialed in for knives, and that there was a batch of the steel that came out that had some QC issues. I wouldn't worry too much about it now. If you do have chipping issues, try a full resharpening a few times, going through the rough stones only. Form a burr, then cut lightly into the stone to remove it, then repeat 3-4 times. This usually solved the reported issues, though not always. I only have the one S30V blade on my tanto Griptillian, but have not had problems with the edge chipping during use or sharpening, and I've only given it a full sharpening once.

154cm(doesn't cost extra) is a fine steel, and does well for EDC.
However I would be stuck between s30v and D2.
D2 is not as brittle as everyone thinks it is. It's a good, fine, and very nice steel.
s30v as we know is a great steel.

About how long is the wait on a Custom Grip?
Wanting to get one but want to know how long it would take to be done and get to me.

I haven't had any experience with N680, but have used both D2 and S30V quite a bit. Both great steels, but I prefer D2, especially if it'll be coated, as that will cut down on the need for maintenance.
