I went to Microtech's website and noticed that they list CPM S35-VN as the grade of steel on most of their knives, but at the bottom it says something to the effect that blade steel can change based on availability. Isn't that like ordering a V8 engine for your car and getting a 4 cylinder because they ran out?

They seem to use S35-VN more than anything, but also CTS-204p. I just got a SOCOM Delta in that steel. I'm sure that's just a bit of legal verbiage to cover their asses. If steel is important to you though, I would always be sure to ask the dealer to check it before they ship it out.

I've been looking at picking up a Whaleshark, how does the s35 stack up to the CTS?

The 204CP ranks high in wear resistance, and the CPM S35VN ranks high for toughness.
