I bought a Taiwanese War Sword about 5 months ago. I thought the paper work with the knife and the online details said the knife was made from D2 steel. Now all the ad details are saying its made from SK5. I know they are made USA now(would have waited if I had known). Just wondering what I have. It does hold an edge very well.

SK5 is similar to 1080. some might argue that for a large knife, this still is better. In any case, it is tough, very tough and will hold an edge well. Here is Europe, this still was used to make train tracks...that should tell you something.

Personally, after owning a large D2 knife, I would NEVER own a larger D2 blade again. It chipped and after convexing the edge, pieces of the edge fell out. My guess is because the carbide or grain structure was too large. In any case, my take is the simpler the better. Sk5 is a simple steel, but very good.
