I am planning on making a "short, gladiator type sword", double edged, 20" OAL. Should I use a lower carbon steel such as 1060 or 1050? 1 1/2" x 1/4"? Leaning towards a convex grind. What are your thoughts??

Thanks in advance.

I would think most of the 10xx series carbon steels would be fine for a short sword but something like 5160 might be better. Does anyone know just what the modern equivalent steel would be of your average sword steel from the Roman period? -Guy Thomas

...The steel 5160 is used my many of the sword makers today, the small amount of chrome in the mix strenghtens the steel quite a bit, and I think a Rockwell of about 45-50 is right also. the 10xx steels are good too, 1040-1050 is what Meuseam Replicas use to use but have gone to Krupp55, I think.I believe the Roman swords of that period were anywhere from 30-55RC average if I remember right, with many makers and many formulas. .....Ironhorse....
