Hrmm... I sold one of my Gerber knives to a friend and bought a Smith and Wesson SWAT 3000 to replace it. Pretty solid knife, got it for $40 (retail price). Wondering what steel it used... looks like 440A or AUS-8 or something. Not too sure. Anyone want to help me out?
I really should save up for some really high-end production knives, but I'm a student, and so that means I'm pretty much a bum and I need a knife I won't cry about losing...

Unless they changed it, really crappy steel. My friend broke his blade while making wood shaving on a log. For forty buck you can get a bigger, stronger, sharper blade and a more dependable lock. Cold steel knives at Bortach.com. Trust me. I have two of their folders and they are rock solid with AUS 8a steel. And their handles are more comforable and they weigh less than a SWAT knife. In my opinion, gun makers should stick to things that go bang. SW and Colt are ruining their rep (in my mind) by making below par knives.

No offense intended, but I pride myself on honesty (rudeness if you like).

Hrmm thanks for da' input. 440A isn't bad at all. For 40 dollars, yes I could have gotten a better blade, but I don't really have a wide selection open to me in the town and I don't really like ordering from internet because I can't inspect anything and I hate having to return things and everything. I like immediate results. When I give them money, I was to see the knife immediately... Oh well, mebbe I'll try internet orders sometime later. Like when I'm out of school.

Well Raggio, technically, they do stick to things that go bang. S&W has Taylor Cutlery make their knives, Colt uses United Cutlery.

If anything goes wrong I'll just blame it on Taylor, Smith and Wesson firearms are still cool.

According to Taylor it is 440c. I would believe the 440a story more. Actually I would believe 420J2 as well.

All I know is it starts with a 4

Hey chang,

i suggest next time you have $40 bucks, look around for the best deal (swat goes for $25) and ask an the forums for a good knife for under $50. For that money i would get a spyderco or a cold steel. Quality for a great price.

anyway what does "chang the asian janitorial apparatus" mean?

And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold the great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads...And His tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth; and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Mike, taylor culery claims the steel is 440c? Yeah right! I saw my neighbors edge roll pretty seriously when he was sharpening it once. Its very soft steel! The blade coating comes off pretty easily too. Better luck next time!
Andrew

Asian Janitorial Apparatus means a device used for janitorial duty that was in some way Asian. I don't know why I call myself that now, but it sounds cool

. I tried being Chang the Chinese Cheeto for a while, but that didn't seem to sound as good as the Asian Janitorial Apparatus. Oh well.

I'd believe the 440a. i had a large swat, thinned the bevels radically and use it as a razor

it's no 440c, but it was better than two 420j2 knives i had before i discovered quality knives. chang, for forty bucks, you can do a lot better. Get a spyderco or cold steel. even gigands are a big step up in my opinion.

I was thinking maybe I could be:
Chang the Chinese Cheeto
Chang the Asian Window Squeegee
Chang the Asian Janitorial Apparatus
Chang the Asian Helicoptor (it has to be pronounced in really bad English... like "chang da eh-jian helee-kop-tore" or something)
Chang the Asian Satellite
Chang the Asian Textbook
Chang the Asian Avocado
Chang the Asian Police Car

any suggestions?

Chang, you have problems, but not in a bad way. I personally like Janitorial apparatus the best, when i first saw that i laughed for 10 mins. straight. Seriously.
Andrew

Chang, you got a great sense of humor! Check my post on Bill Moran and his comments on the SW1000 auto he sharpened. But that knife might have been a exception according to the bad comments i got from members who know a a lot more about knives than i do!

To set the record straight, the blade steel in the SWAT is 420-J2. Believe me I have visited the manufacturer for the SWAT on several occasions. 420-J2 is by no means a premium or super steel but if heat treated and shaped correctly it does cut and hold a fair edge. It is interesting to hear some of your comments that the SWAT does cut and seems like 440A. I put up a post a year ago that 420J2 was an OK steel for inexpensive knives and I got slammed with comments like, "That it is the worst crap after put into a knife".

I do agree for $40 you can probably get a knife with AUS-8A, 6M, 12C27 or 440A which are all better performers than 420-J2.

aaargh! i'm stuck with 420J2 steel!

I'm going to see if I can tweak it a little bit... hrmm maybe I'll redo the heat treating in my Asian knife oven, and then quench it in a bucket that came with the asian janitorial apparatus and clean the handle off with an asian window squeegee.

chang, Suggestion for new name. I think chang the asian walla walla bing bang, has a nice melodic ring to it. If fact it could even be the title to a song.

Cheap stainless is no way to live..Here is the solution to your problem.Sell the S&W take the cash and trek on over to Neil street where Chad your local Newt livesay dealer works.Plunk down $25 for a Woo(make sure you get the ball chain for the sheath)Now you have a nice piece of high carbon heat treated to perfection,a great Kydex sheath, and peace of mind knowing the maker will back up his work and do everything he can to keep his customer happy. Then say goodbye to Chad, trek back across the street to Champaign Surplus and check out all the nice Spydercos they have on your way back home.(dont buy there though, their prices are way too high)If you were able to get enough money for the S&W you might even have enough cash left for some lunch...

You got the knife, now don't go and hate it 'cause it has a funny name & a bad rep. Use it, use it hard and report back here and let us know what happens. We may all be surprized. You don't NEED a porsche to go to the grocery store...it is nice but you don't NEED it. Dig?
Now I'm not out to offend anyone out there in BF land, of course BM, Spydies, CS are better, but hey, he bought it and should enjoy it.
Once again, just my 2¢

420J2, no way! It is Talonite I tell you! I remember Rob Simonich hand delivered 3oz of the stuff to the Taiwan maker to put into the next batch so he could use the name!

Ya 420J2 is the stuff. I laughed when I called and the person on the phone said what they did. It kind of sounded like the SNL skit.

"It is 440C, ya that's the ticket, 440C"
