So without too much effort I can get 420hc scary sharp. I love the stuff as done by Buck.
I am totally clueless when it comes to the super steels. I’ve got a couple S30V blades here and a couple S35vn should be arriving soon. What stone or whatever do you guys use on the high end steels?

what David said^........

I also use alumina ceramic stones and will get them sharp too.

Would recommend looking into bonded diamond stones. Edge pro matrix, venev, and a few other brands offer them. Any diamond stones will work though. But I feel the bonded variants are easier for beginners of the abrasive. Diamonds can wear out fast when your learning on surface mount stones. And surface mount stones can't be repaired or refreshed like bonded stones can.

But you'll get similar results either way.

Edge pro sized stones work for me but not everyone. I do believe venev have larger bench stones though.

In any case silicon carbide like Norton stones will work great also. More affordable too.

Ceramic will work but I find they load up alot faster on these steels. Meaning you have to clean them when they load to get them to cut.

So pick what ya like and then get a strop of some material, basswood, thin leather or whatever and some diamond paste/spray to finish.

Thanks for the welcome. Currently on the 420hc blades I use ceramic crock sticks and then strop them. Works awesome but when I try that approach with the more pricey stuff it actually seems to make it worse.
I visit in Post Falls a couple times a year so I guess I could just take them back to momma but that can get quite spendy as I walk around in the store while they sharpen the knives.
Pretty sure I’ve got a Norton silicon carbide stone new in the box so will try that. Thanks.

You guys might laugh but this simple sharpener works great. I use it on all of my knives. I have 4 of them scattered between my office, garage, house and camper.15538744539492759549727039546244.jpg

This is what I have been using recently. The knife shown is not S30V, but it is 440C and the diamond stone does a great job.

Good pj. That looks like the fine diamond. Ceramic cuts slower, sure. Because it's finer and the swarf builds up fast on it's surface. So, it needs to be
cleaned. I sharpened 4 knives yesterday: one w/ s90v, one of 425M steel and 2 w/ 420 steel. On the first one I used a coarse diamond which is usually as fine as I'll go. The remaining were sharpened on a JUM-3 (SiC). The first 2 I used a back-hone method and the other 2 was a full sharpening. A fine SiC cuts 420 steel real fast. DM
