Hey everyone, i recently purchased an Edge pro apex from another member,,, although i am slow i am getting great edges! sharper than i have ever been freehand!, now i am thinking about getting some new stones,, i currently have the stock 220/320/800 which are pretty good, just looking to be able to cut a little better on hard steels to set a new edge and overall better performance! i am open to options,,, also where does everyone get there stones from,,, i am in alberta canada, and it sure looks like i will be taking a beating on the shipping from some of the online sources? any input would be really appreciated!!! tips aswell( ps what kind of lube mixture is everyone using on their stones? i have been doing a drop or two of dish soap in the little aquirt bottle then fill with water? is there a better solution??? )
thanks
I hope to get some good info passed around!!!

I can tell you what, but not where. You want chosera or shapton. I use chosera stones and have the 8 piece kit. You can easily get away with the 5 piece though. I soak my stones in plain water and use the bottle as needed.

I use diamond to rough re-profile and the chosera's to finish all the way to 10k. Google will help you find where to buy them and other things you may want. If you don't have one already, The drill stop collar is almost a must for the EP. Google will guide you.

Good luck and happy sharpening!
James.

thanks a lot "blame it on god" i have noticed that a lot of people recommend the shapton or the chosera,,, i have also heard of the drill stop collar but i don't understand the application, hoping someone can chime in on that also!

The drill stop collar allows you to change between stones that vary in thickness and keep the same angle. Go to YouTube and search "drill stop collar" to get a better idea of how it works.

^^Yup,

And even a brand new set of stones very in thickness, So the drill stop collar is worth very cent. It saves a lot of time verses using a magic marker and gives perfect tracking.

I believe chefs knives to go has everything you need.

I use the edge pro brand 120 grit SiC stone. I picked it up from ebay for $17 shipped. I've only reprofiled one (big) knife and I'm so glad I bought it. Very useful.

Nothing wrong with the EP stones, But the tapes annoy me. The chosera's are so much better.

I use the 120 micron diamond to re-profile and even out new knives. Or when friends bring me something that wouldn't cut butter. I would have worn out a few EP stones with the amount of steel it has removed. It's paid for itself a few times over including labor.

If you wanna try a variety of stones that are inexpensive but work a bit better than the stock EP ones, the moldmaster from Congress Tool are nice to try. They wear longer than the EP ones too.

If you're looking for a recommendation of stones, I like and use:
-120 grit EdgePro Stock
-400 grit Chosera
-1000 Grit Chosera
-1000 Grit Edgepro Stock

Does everything I need. You may want a strop too to get that hair whittling sharpness.

I had a friend in the US get them for me from Congress Tools only because I am set up with paypal only. Congress Tools will ship international at very reasonable rates but will only take Visa and American Express. I should set up a payment method where I could order direct from them because I want a lifetime supply of moldmasters. :)

i am going to fire off an email to congress and see what happen there! i also really like the idea someone else put up about having a diamond stone in the low grit for big repair or setting a new angle,,,and of course i should try some shaptons!! looks like i am going on a spending spree !!this is all great stuff thanks for all the input!

Thanks for asking this marino! I've been looking to pick up some better stones for my edge pro too. Great information here. Does the 5/16" stop collar fit properly on the apex?

I have a DMT coarse and I still prefer my moldmaster 150 grit for hogging off lots of steel. On knives that I just rebevel to 36° inclusive, my 240 grit cuts fast enough. The last time I had to hog a lot of steel(taking spyderco GB to 22° inlcusive from 36°) I used my 150 grit. I stopped before hitting the edge and continued with the 240.

I do have the SiC powder that Ben Dale sells(very cheap) and a pane of glass. I used to use this for flattening my stock EP stones but it works just as well de-glazing the moldmasters that get glazed. The SiC powder doesn't seem to wear the moldmasters much at all. The 600 grit moldmaster that I use for finishing, I use dry since it seems to crumble if used wet. But when used dry it gets glazed, it works pretty much as a polishing stone.

Here's my result using the glazed 600 grit stone to finish my ZDP endura. It's ready for the diamond paste strops now for a polished bevel.

I've got a ZDP-189 dragonfly2. I haven't had any issues with chipping even after resharpening to 30 degrees inclusive.
