What Style Khukuri to give to Mother?

Greetings to all,

I am thinking of gettin a khukuri for my mother. Any suggestions as to which style and size to get?

Harry

Depends on what your mother wants to do with it.

A Deer horn will be very nice but due to its rarity the knife might not be used very much.

A 16.5" WWII or 15" Sirupati would be a very useful khukuri that is not too heavy.

While clearing some brush around my yard I loaned my mother my LTC. I had a MD ATAK2. My mother chopped much faster than I did with the ATAK2, soon I was relegated to carrying the bush and branches away.

Kozac,
I'd vote for the Gangaola. It's not too large - about the same size as the BAS - is beautifully finished, has a gorgeous decorated scabbard of uniquely finished leather, and comes with a complete tool kit that includes tweezers and a buttonhook. I think it would be hard to beat for anybody's mom.

Thank you for the suggestions, fellows. I think I'll wait for further suggestions before making a move.

Hi Harry.
I gave my wife the 1st Khukuri we bought,a 15" Ang Khola.

Barb isn't your everyday gurl though. She has a 30-30 Winchester with a scope and can shoot a 12 Ga. Duke style, skins animals and cleans fish.vbeg

Seriously. I would have to agree with Berk on this one,I haven't seen one of the Gangaolas yet,but the Hanuman Special came with the same kind of scabbard and the little tools. It is one beautiful piece of work.

Will is also right with the little deer horn Dhankuta style, but then you do have one that is "Too pretty to be used." I have a hard time understanding that with most knives, but I would even have a hard time using one of those.

Actually everyone is right the little 15" to 17" village Sirupati Jeff said is pretty cool to.

The other one I would recommend is the "Balance" Khukuri. There was a post under the "Favorite?" thread made by Uncle that said there were six more being made and I put dibs on 2 of them.My wife and g'daughter who is living with us fell absolutely in love with mine.
The ones being made should be even prettier than mine is.

I believe this little one would make short work of cuttin up a chicken, but you run into the danger of "Oh,it is just too pretty to be used" things.

But then if your mom happens to be like my wife,by all means get her a 15" Ang Khola.

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and how into knives your mom is.Uncle has some very small Kagas Katne Khukuris coming some time.
If I recall it right they are about 6" to 7" long.

Bill had some 15" Sirupatis at a discount a while back. That would be a good choice. Very light in the hand and the blade shape allows for it to be used for many tasks. The one I tested had a needle sharp point (that I was unable to break though I tried pretty hard).

Namaskar Uncle Bill,

Two questions before I commit myself on this one: what style khukuri does your wife Yangdu prefer? Are the 15 inch Sirupati Shop 2 made?

Hi Harry:

Yangdu uses a WWII model or a 15 inch Ang Khola for chopping duties -- but remember, like most Nepalis she grew up using a khukuri for all sorts of tasks. For a concealed weapon she prefers a 9 inch model which she carries taped to the inside of her thigh.

Tilt: Pala was just here and I was making posts for him. He left and I forgot to change the name. Pala did not post this. I did.

Namaskar Uncle Bill,

Thank you, Uncle Bill. I'll take the 15 inch Sirupati then.

Namaskar Uncle Bill,

Thank you again, Uncle Bill. I am sure Mother will find this very useful for her garden. I am worried though, she may take such a liking to her Sirupati that she could take a fancy to a larger khukuri(perhaps a 20 or 21 inch AK or Sirupati).
