Greetings all,

I do not hang out too much here, so I consider myself a newbie to you hatchet men. :)

I bought this little gem on ebay, and I was a little depressed when I realized it was quite chewed up with a disc grinder. It had gouges out of it 1.5" back from the blade. I thought to myself, "Why?" However, I had to turn a lemon into lemonade. So I first started grinding so as to make it a symmetrical blade shape, thinking that would be a bit hawkish. (Go easy on me, remember I am a newb. :p I liked the way it turned out.

Now, with the funky opening on this handle, it will put my wood carving skills (or lack there of) to task. I want to ask you guys a couple of questions:

What type of wood would you use (exotic is fine, but I will be using it, so nothing brittle)?

How long of a handle would you put on it. I want it to be somewhat balanced and proportional.

What handle style should I make? I was thinking a straight hawk handle, even though it is not a hawk, or maybe a traditional curved hatchet handle pattern.

I am really pleased as to how this turned out, for it was quite ugly. I had to grind quite a bit to get all the nasty grinds out, so I had no qualms about "wrecking" it, for it was already one foot in the recycling bin so to speak.

I put my edc silver dollar in the picture for reference to the head.

Thanks guys in advance for your help.

I would go with 14 inch hickory. You can buy them from many places online. It will be a pain to shape the handle so it fits in the eye.

Nice looking head Great one to restore. I agree on the 14" hickory. You may start at your local hardware store and see if you can get one close and fit it.

I would bring that to a local machine shop and see if they could mill out those crazy indents in the head. After that you should be able to go to the local hardware store and get a decent handle.

I thought about milling those out, but since I had to sand out the gouges, it is getting thinner than I want. I can carve wood ok, will not be easy, but if I can get off BF, and into the garage, I can giterdone. I have a grounding rod that I may be able to hammer or grind into a cap for it too! Now, I am showing my OCD.
