I really enjoyed Skunk's thread on which Bug Out Knife/knives would be good. It was very informative. I have been trying to decide what type/style of sheath to buy for whichever knives I would choose. Would a highride be better? A drop Loop? Cross Draw? A pouch sheath? A sheath with a pouch? This isn't really a Kydex or leather Question. It's more of a is one style better than another kind of question. I have been getting all my sheaths in Drop loop but have really been looking at a Highride or even a pouch sheath. I guess if I decide on the Highride then I'll be wondering whether to get the Highride or the Crossdraw/Highride. What style do you prefer?

You have already answered my questions on what material. I ended up with one of each. :D

I think it also depends on the knife. I'm getting a horizontal, snug fit (no keeper strap) for my meaner street. Snug fit high mount for my Ratweiler and FSH, both of which I'm thinking will be able to be mounted on my left side if I want the crossdraw option. Leather on all three. Dwayne is doing the work. I prefer snug fits. In the past a keeper strap has gotten in the way of a quick draw. Don't know if this is the case on Dwayne's sheaths. Dwayne designs his straps to swing out of the way of the knife when being drawn. The FSH sheath may have to come with a keeper strap so I may find out soon enough if it poses a problem when drawing it. With a knife the size of the FSH it might be a good idea to have a keeper strap. Not sure but I'll find out when they come.

For larger knives, I prefer leather.

For those knives, I prefer a high-ride sheath, preferably made by Kenny Rowe.

I prefer high-ride sheaths primarily so that I can sit comfortably, which I do whenever I can.

i carry a kydex/cordura sheath on my left hip (.220 saber sj), and a kydex sheath on my right hip (NICK mod (sj size)) daily, and they both have their ups and downs....

i find that i dont care if my kydex gets scratched up by asphalt etc, where as i worry about the cordura, BUT, the cordura gives when you hit it on things like tables, where as the kydex really yanks your belt in the direction the sheath is pulled in.

the curdura is all around more comfortable, but it is bigger and the snap latch, while not a big problem, isnt as nice as the kydex bendoveratthetop fit....

i have used leather, and found consistently that i was afraid of punctuing the sides upon resheathing, and displeased with the consistance of long term fit, as the snugness almost immediately went away upon wearing... i dont really trust a material that expands over time, even if its only slightly

mostly i was afraid of punctuing the sides.

Good points on the leather Seth. I had thought of the puncture issue but the one sheath that I currently have from Dwayne is very thick and the leather is much harder than any leather sheath that I've come across. I hadn't thought of the "wear in" issue you brought up. I wonder if water and harsh weather will increase this issue? I guess I'll be finding out. The one sheath that I currently have for my Rat Hunter has a wax coating on it and I was thinking of coating the others with Sno-Seal but was concerned that the Sno-Seal would soften it and change the fitting and color. I may need to email Dwayne on this. Thanks for the input.

For hard use (abuse)in continually wet conditions I go with Kydex. I go 4 wheelin in the Everglades and that often means submersion in water and mud all day long. I have manages to seriously gouge the sheath on several occasions without even realizing it till I took it off. A leather sheath would have been torn badly if not ruined. Also leather tends to hold moisture, which brings rust into consideration. Maybe not with Infi but certainly with other mere mortal steels.
