This looks like the sword(s) the Spartans used in the movie "300". . .is this an actual style of Greek sword or just a stylized movie pattern that looks cool?

This pic popped up when I was looking up a picture of a kilij referenced in another thread. . .since I didn't know what a kilij was I decided to look it up so that I would know what it looked like.

Thanks

I'm no expert but I'm inclined to say the latter. All the swords that I've seen that looked like that had something to do with the movie/graphic novel "300".

As said above, it's a heavily "Hollywooded" Kopis/Falcata pattern. Not sure why they made it look like this, as original Kopis blades look better (IMHO). Very comparable (but a few inches longer) than a standard Kukri as we know it today. It is actually believed that the Kukri is a throw back to the old Greek style, having migrated first to Egypt, and then further to Nepal to create the Kora and later the Kukri we know and love.

It was an extremely effective blade for its time, it had the power of an axe and the cutting performance of Japanese style blades. The curve allowed the first line of hoplites to "chop" down on enemies over a shield wall, keeping themselves relatively safe behind their shields and dealing devastating blows.

In my humble opinion one of the most effective edged weapons ever conceived by man.
