What was the fixed blade Buck knife that looked like something you would have seen on safari? It was some type of skinner and would have been the top of the line for Buck in the late 70's early 80's. The blade curved upward and it was extremly well made. The only one on the fixed blades with a mahogany handle. What was it and is it still in production?

I believe that you are referring to the Kalinga. That knife is no longer in production.

That would have been the Kalinga. I am not sure what the handle material was, but, it is no longer in production.

Thanks to you both. As a teen I collected Buck knives but this one was out of my "summer job" price range. Is the major hope for finding this at an antique shop or a forgotten hardware store? It is an impressive and unique design.

You can still find the Kalinga, and its kid brother the Akanua, online on one of the popular auction sites. I have also heard of folks having luck visiting long time Buck dealers who still happen to have one on their shelf or in the back room.
Good luck!

Southern Edge,
There is a shop locally in Nashville with one. The price was upwards of $250 if I remember correctly. If you are patient one can be had on the auction block in like new condition for $100 - $150. Good Luck!!
