After being away for a week, I see the forum has changed format. For starters, you have to log on, so no more quick looks....slightly annoying.

But I have just found an extremely annoying bug in the system. I just spent about 15 minutes composing a detailed reply to a fellow member requesting information. My time was spent in scaling distances on a map, checking addresses, etc. When I was finished my reply, and clicked to submit it, I got a message that I was now logged off, or something.

I'm not going to waste my time like this.

Is there a solution to this bug?

Were you using the quick reply box or did you click the Post Reply button?

It sounds like you have cookies blocked on your pc if you have to log in every time that you come here, or you haven't clicked the "remember me" checkbox when you log in. If that's the case, then the system isn't going to save your information and won't let you post.

We upgraded the software. Everybody had to log on again once, but if you check the box for "remember me" and you still have cookies enabled in your browser there shouldn't be any problem after that.

Spark and Cougar:
I used the Post Reply button. What is the difference between it and the Quick Reply button? I have searched the FAQ unsuccessfully about reply methods.

I did not click the Remember Me box. I'm trying that now.

I don't know how my computer handles cookies. It was just switched over to Win XP from Win 98, and it is set at Automatically Handle Cookies, but I can't find a definition of that in my Internet Explorer Help. I see there is a setting for Enable Session Cookies: I will try that.

Thanks for this help. This was pretty frustrating. I had actually spent more than the 15 minutes composing my reply, than I had stated...it was more like 30 minutes (gathering together maps, tape measure, & calculator, plus checking various prices on different websites). That's just the way I am, when I have the time...perfectionist? putterer? fool? Plus, computers and my old brain don't get along too well!

Thanks again,
P.

I did not click the Remember Me box.

That's what caused the problem. For future reference, though, it pays to copy any post that took more than a minute or two to write to your clipboard before you click the post button. That has saved me hours and hours of rewriting over the years ... there are lots of things that can go wrong, with our system or your computer or your ISP or our ISP....

Just hit CONTROL-A CONTROL-C to copy the whole post to your clipboard, or use your mouse if you'd rather.

I had gotten into the habit of composing long posts in Word. That took care of formatting and saving and spell checking and ... not losing it. :)

I also just switched from Win 98 to XP and it took a while to find where all the good stuff was hidden.

You have my sympathy!

Thanks for the advice, people! Slowly, slowly, I learn how to use these confounded machines!

(I do better with simple tools....like knives!)
