Thought I'd take a little break from things and toss a line in the water. I'm using a little Diawa rod with a little reel and 6 pound test. Bait is a little spoon with treble hook. I toss the line in from an old, closed, steel bridge and instantly this baby is on it. I had to hang the pole over the edge and aim it straight down because it was bending way too much. At times I thought the darn thing was being pulled back by his friends I was having so much trouble. I just started the sport of fishing and can three species, Sunny, Perch, Trout. No scale or ruler, but, of course ESEE-3. This was literally an hour ago. Tossed him back in. Any help would be appreciated.

It might be what is called a fallfish. It looks part like a carp & another fish. A fallfish is an ugly looking fish in my opinion & they are usually in a school of them.
They have alot of bones & I was told they are not worth eating. If you put it on a fishing stringer, the fish's head & body will fall apart by the end of the day or so. For survival situations, I would try eating them but I prefer trout or bass.

Thank you very much. I really had no idea. I think he survived the 40+ drop back into the water. Seemed a little stunned, or, even flat out knocked out, but, after about a minute, I think he started to swim.

I guess it could technically call it a fallfish, but we just call it a carp and throw it back. You can eat it if you are hungry and patient enough but I don't recommend it.

Looks like you probably caught a carp, but I'd say it was definitely a fallfish when you returned it :D:D:D:D:D:D

Yeah thats a carp=crap allright. You can tell from the pink fins. Very bad fish for any river or lake. Being a junk fish. I've killed everyone I have caught/snagged. I'm not being nasty! Its just Carp ar not from the US. they are from asia/japan and killing off sports fish at a huge rate, by eating their eggs. See one kill one. They are Bad juju. edgy

When I was a kid my grandfather used to smoke carp every once in a while. I remember it being a pretty tasty treat. I had no idea it was a garbage fish until years later.

I caught a few of these also and I'm still trying to figure out what kind. Its not a common, buffalo, asian carp.It could be a grass carp or maybe even a golden red horse. but not positive. My comp screen is bad so I can't see the color of it very well.

That's what they pay the mods with around here.

You just caught yourself a get-out-infraction card.

Yup, we get a lot of carp around here. There's always someone trying to toss us a line, too. But you know what our favorite fish are. :D

fall fish are usually more silver instead of the goldish tint to the scales. or atleast the ones ive caught in NJ and NY
ive only started to catch fall fish within the past 3 years. before that ive never seen or heard of them though.

Looks like its part of the carp family, but here they are more yellow. It looks like a giant fathead minnow. Its definitely a trash fish.

Could be a carp, the best way to cook is put them on a board a little bigger than the fish, season up the way you like, cook till tender and flaky, when done toss the fish back and eat the board...
