What the heck do I need a razor style blade for

I bought two Bear MGC razor style folders, one with mother-of-pearl handle, just because they were cute. Now that I have them, what is the proper use for such a blade style. I doubt the manufacturer intended people to shave with these babies...;)

They are perfect for cutting coupons out of the Sunday paper. If you need to split a pill they work fantastic. You only have to worry about cutting yourself instead of stabbing yourself also. They sharpen up very easily and they......Guess thats it for me.

You buy knives because they are cute? You must have more money than me. The only reason that I would have a razor would be to shave. Sorry I can't help you more.

A friend of mine likes them for cleaning the rabbits he raises. I can't remember why though.

If you can develop a fine touch with them, I understand they're good for keeping the nose and ear hairs under control.

They're good for cutting rope, especially on a ship. Sailor's knives traditionally have no point; if it came with a point they'd break it off -- because they have no use for a point, and when you're getting thrown around in a storm the last thing you want is a pointed knife in your hand.

it's my understanding that the razor shaped blade was developed after the War between the States when so many men returned home minus arms and there was a need for a knife that could be opened with one hand. Thus the term "one armed barlow."
As far as sailors knives, ship's owners and officers forbade knives which had a point. This supposedly disouraged stabbbings. Now, slashing was another story....

If they had trouble opening the blade with only one arm, why didn't they buy a Spyderco instead? :D :D :D

Seriously, we should put together a list of all blade styles and their intended use. We've come up with two reasonable explanations to the use of the razor style here.

Anyone have a pointer to a picture of one of these knives? I know what a sheepsfoot blade looks like, but what is otherwise "razor" about them? Is it the little curved piece of steel (like a backward guard when deployed) that permits one handed opening with the index or middle finger?

Thomas... That pointer just takes me back to the top of the thread where now appears in red the knife's name, but it does not appear to be a link to anything...

Hi Tom.. OK, I caught the other thread now. Didn't see that before cause I didn't look far enough down the list. I don't see why you couldn't shave with these. They certainly look like they were made for that purpose. Look darned nice actually. I would try an even thinner (than 30 deg) included angle (say 25 deg) if the steel can take it.
