What the heck is this?? My wife picked this up for me

My wife got this for me at a thrift store today, but I have NO IDEA what it is. But I'm sure you guys know.

While those hollow ends are pretty deep, I've seen similar hammers designed for use with chisels, I suppose to help protect your hand and stop the hammer from slipping off.
