What the heck is up with my CUDA Maxx?

I recieved this knife last week thanks to Spectre. Very happy with the purchase and believe it or not have been carrying it and no other when not at work. SO here is the deal. It was kind of dull when I got it and sharpened it up first on my Lansky and then on my large white stone. All is well in knifedom. Shaved hair easily and had a good bite to the edge. I have used it exclusively throuhout the week for everything that I could think of using it for. Well went to touch up the edge and for the life of me I can't get it as sharp as I had it once before. I have cut boxes, cardboard boards into strips, deboned the requisite chicken, steak, etc. etc. Also cut poly rope with it so definetly the edge needed touching up.

Here is the deal with the edge: I have used the Lansky to touch it up with the med. diamond hone and then finished by hand on my very well oiled white stone. This edge that is on it now will absolutely slice paper like no tomorrow. It will cut poly rope very well but just not quite as well as before. This is a subjective thing about the poly rope. It doesn't shave hair that well at all now. The edge has no burr but did have when I went to the white stone after using the med. diamond hone. Looking at the edge I see no rolling or anything else that would indicate anything amiss with the edge. Running your fingers very lightly along the edge and the edge grabs like it should. So bottom line hear are there any suggestions as to what direction to take to get it back to that hair poppin sharpness that D2 is noted for? As usual any and all suggestions are welcome. I just may have to invest in the Edge Pro me thinks. Keep'em sharp

The usual PS: it is also becomming increasingly difficult to disengage the frame lock when flipping it open. Any hints here?

get a sharp pencil, and mark the surface on the blade tang that meets the frame when the blade's engaged (open).. smooths out the blade deploying process like magic. keep in mind that this will only work when that surface is relatively dry/free of oil or tufflglide. once the graphite is marked on it'll stay for good until you clean it off, at which point, just reapply it granted the surface is dry.

Use the magic marker trick. Mark both side of the blade bevels and grind away with the rough stuff until you get a very slight burr. Turn to the other side and do the same. On a side note, did you thin the bevels down to 15deg and edge it to 20deg?

The tuff opening is the effect of the famous Ti galling that was talk about. Use the pencil trick as mentioned by previous post

I could be wrong here, but it sounds like what is happening is that you are going from the Lansky, which gives you a set angle, then you are finishing by hand. You might be juuusst missing the angle set by the Lansky and that isn't permitting you to get that scary sharp edge you are looking for.

For me, I have never been able to get that feel for sharpening by hand. I can get a blade to where it will cut, but can't quite finish it. That's why I got and Edge Pro. I get it wicked sharp, light touch up by hand after the edge has seen some use. But, when the egde goes, it's back to the Edge Pro.

Thanks for the info fella's. I tried the pencil thing on the tang. I do something similar on my .357 snubbie around the top strap, forcing cone, and crane area. Just to prevent cutting especially on the top strap. Thing is when I did it with the knife it fails miserably the spine whack test. Drat! As for the sharpening thing I have done the magic marker trick even free hand sharpening both on an oiled stone and dry stone. I am fairly proficient with free hand sharpening and usually only use my Lansky for reprofiling 4" and under blades. Anywho, it is starting to come around but only if I strop the edge on some rough textured paper. Not using compound cause I don't have any. The edge is nice and even on both sides almost identical for each side I should say.

Now here is another thought. This knife I truly like which when I first rec. it I had my doubts. But the more I carry it the more I like it and screw what sheeple think! Well not really. So I am thinking of having a leg sheath made for it. A nice one though. Something nice and comfortable with 2 straps sort of like an ankle holster for it. Anybody ever done this with these types of large folders? Carry is to be outside right leg or inside left which is typical of the ankle holster set up. Keep'em sharp

Hi Longbow. This is a bit OT, but I put your stuff into the mail this morning! Hope you get the edge worked out.

Sorry man, no advice here...

Just wanted to say that I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with that exact problem on the CUDA Maxx- makes me feel less incompetent! I was sharpening a few of my knives the other night, got everything from my Swiss Tinker to my Trailmaster and Kukri hair popping sharp. Tried the Lansky, and tried the Sharpmaker on the Cuda Maxx....still no luck. It gets to where it's sufficient...even to a point where it shaves some, but just not as well as the rest of my knives.

I've been thinking about trying to put a convex edge on a few of my knives, and the Maxx might be my first volunteer.

Hi Art thanks for the headsup. Sorry about the Panthers. Thought they were going to pull it out. My daughter down at Pitt called on Sat.and her and I were both rooting for them. I am a die hard Bills fan too.

As for the edge sharpness got it pretty decent now. Did the stropping thing on the rough texture paper and then tilted the spine up a bit from what I normally sharpen at and hit it on a very small med. grit stone and now it has a nice bite to it so I will leave it there. Cleaned off the tang where I put the pencil on there and now locks up good again although on ocassion it will stick but better that than failing.

As stated I initially purchased it cause it was a good price and I have wanted one for sometime. You know just to have. But I will tell ya I am liking this thing more and more. Swings really easy now too after putting the graphite pencil around the pivot hole and where the washers go. Then some gun grease and voila` swings like a champ. Thanks for all the info fellas and I will be touching base again with a BM AFCK(nib) with ATS34 PE I just traded my extra S2K for. Always wanted one of those too. Keep'em sharp
