What the heck? This isn't a pipe hawk!

Just got a Cold Steel pipe hawk in the mail. I am so disappointed. It's not a pipe hawk at all. It's a hammer hawk in the shape of a pipe. I didn't expect that it would be a functional pipe. But, I thought the bowl would be hollow. I bought it off eBay, and to be fair, the seller does mention that the bowl is not hollow. But, I didn't read the description before I bought it. I don't have the means or skill to hollow out the bowl. I don't know that I'll do with this now. I'm just disappointed and venting. Thanks for listening.

eBay's like doing a deal with the devil: you need to really be on your game and read the descriptions VERY carefully. I bought an antique Filipino dagger that was described as having forge marks and instead had several large spots of serious rust. The pics were taken at an angle and were slightly blurry, so they looked like patina rather than rust. Ah well, it was a fair price, even with the rust.

IMO a poll hawk is a lot more functional than a pipe hawk and tobacco tastes like s### smoked in steel. Throw it don't smoke it ;-))

Regards

Robin

I bought one, but knew the deal before I got it and prefer it as is. I don't need a bowl on my hawk. However, bummed for you since you got something you didn't expect.

I feel your pain for not getting what you thought but there is a tremendous amount of work and talent involved in a real pipe hawk, ie, not cheap. I bought one of these at a knife show for 10 bucks and thought it would make a good wintertime project. I'd make it functional, decorate it and re-sell it. The cast pipe fell apart when I tried to drill it so I cut it off and started throwing it. The side of the eye split ( could have been from the forces of my unique throwing style, any part hits the target first). Short story shorter it is somewhere in the woods behind the Redbud Forge waiting to be discovered by a future archeologist.......

I was planning on having the haft drilled out to make it smokeble. I don't even smoke but I thought it would be a cool project. I think I'm going to cut the "bowl" off and just make it a thrower.

Sorry for your disappointment. Ebay can bring some great prices, but also some disappointments. That's why I usually deal with reputable dealers. They answer all questions and most have some type of guarantee with their products. The small difference in price is worth the peace of mind. The Pipe Hawk is a great thrower as you received it.

Think of it as a preventative. If you did smoke through it, maybe it's toxic? Maybe you'll get pulled over, and now it's drug paraphernalia and a weapon!

I stopped selling or even looking on Ebay. Craigslist is even worse, in my experience.

Surely, somebody sells or could make you an excellent pipe hawk, if you really wanted one. I see the Cold Steel hawks as just "entry level" anyway.

If you have a drill press you could drill it out, if you want one that bad. It would be just as much work to drill out the handle anyway, I'd guess.
If you took it to a machine shop they could do it for you in a few minutes, bring a case of beer on a Friday afternoon and Bobs your uncle.
If you keep it as is don't cut off the poll, it won't affect throwing and will make the hawk much more useful, trust me. :)

This just gets worse. It must be carma. I must have wronged someone somewhere. I just took this thing out to throw it. I was hitting my target but it wouldn't stick. So, I really wound up and threw it way to hard and missed the target. While retrieving it out of my neighbors yard I stepped on a rusty nail. It penetrated about an inch I figure. I'm literally standing on a stack of paper towels as I write this. Man it hurts. And for some reason I find this so damn comical I'm laughing. Best part? As I came out front limping towards my girlfriend I tell her what just happened and she just shrugged, got in her car and took off to pick up a pizza.

Every source I find for this beautiful hawk says the same thing-this is not a functioning pipe hawk, but has a hammer poll. I don't see how you should even be venting. For the 25 bucks they cost they are one of the nicest factory throwing/fighting hawks out there.

Tetnis shots suck! Don't tighten up your muscle when they stick you.

They make excellent throwing hawks (I have been throwing my Rifleman hawk for 10 years and norse hawk for almost as long).

Make sure you take the set screw out before throwing, or you will split the handle the first time it hits handle first. Without the set screw the head will just slide down and no harm done.

Maybe she wants you to quit whining and become a man. I've had tough times sticking a hawk before but it was never because of the hawk. I have three cold steel hawks and they all bite just fine, as long as I'm not trying to put them through a cold hard knot or through the loose resin-coated bark of a dead standing conifer.

Payetterucker I don't think you've read my posts clearly. In my first post I acknowledged that the seller said in the description it wasn't a functional pipe. I just didn't read the description. In my last post I said I was laughing. Not whining. As far as it not biting. Not sure why it didn't. It just didn't. I'll think I have to remove the large bur that it came with.

my experience with several of the older CS hawks (norse hwk being the worst of the lot) was that they had very obtuse edges and needed 5-10 minutes work on a belt sander to redo the edge bevel.
After that they were great throwers for the price.

At least you got some pizza! You will soon grow to love that hawk, trust me. Did you get a tetanus shot?

Yeah it's hard to enjoy pizza when you have lockjaw. :D ... :D ... :D ... :D:D:D:D:D:grumpy:
