What the hell did I do to my computer?!? (RESOLVED!)

I was searching my computer for some files, and I did something that made everything under my user profile to disappear. I don't know what I clicked. A progress bar popped, ran through what looked like my entire harddrive (took about 20-30 seconds), then everything disappeared.

Now everything is "gone" from my desktop (but the background is the same). All my folders, such as My Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Videos, etc are are "gone". The whole user account is "gone".

By "gone" I mean that it's not visible, but it's still "there". If I create a New Folder on my desktop, it's "New Folder (8)" because there's that many other New Folders, they're just not visible. I can load my torrent program, but all the in-progress torrents that were there are all gone.

Some programs aren't listed in my Start Menu anymore, even though they're still installed. "Accessories" isn't listed either. Powerstrip doesn't load when my computer boots.

However, Firefox works just fine, and all the bookmarks and history are still there.

If I click the "Users" folder on my HD, all that displays is "Public", but not the one tied to my Login. If I right click the background of the "Users" folder, I can view previous versions, and I can click a previous date and see my Login, where I can browse everything that should be visible (desktop, My Documents, Downloads, etc). But I can't figure out how to make this login profile visible without doing all that, nor can I figure out how to make things back the way they were.

I know it's not a user/login setting, because I only have on Login on this computer (Admin) and that's what I was using.

What the hell did I do?

How the hell do I fix it?

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, all up to date. System Restore doesn't do anything; in fact it won't restore because it's "missing a file", and says it's probably because of the anti-virus software I'm running, but I'm not running anti-virus software.

I'm freaking out because I'm fairly competent with computers, and I usually don't do crap like this, and if I do, I can usually fix it. But I'm at a total loss this time.

HELP!

Did you look in the folder C:\Users\Yourloginname ?
There you see all the users from that computer including the data folders.

I have no idea what you did, but have you tried doing a system restore to a point before things got screwed-up? That usually helps.

Actually, I did manage to get it to restore (to 4 days ago - problems started yesterday) without an error. Did nothing to fix my problem.:(

Umm use the search function? Search for some files or photos. Maybe you can find where they are all stashed.

Quite strange if you ask me cause I've never heard of it before and am no expert, sorry.

Another bet (if you think you deleted, NOT wiped out your files) is to download those "un-delete" programs that can retrieve deleted files.

Gd luck and hope you can work this out!

I would make sure you're not infected!!

I can find them no problem. They're just not visible like they used to be. They're not "stashed" anywhere, they're right where they always were. I just can't see them.

Nothing's been deleted.

I'm not sure how else to describe it. It's like everything specific to my user profile has been made invisible. Not everything on the computer (obviously...I'm typing on it...and watching the Dune mini-series), just what would be specific to my Login profile. It's like I'm a guest and I can't see the Admin's stuff, except that there are no guest logins/users on my computer, or any logins/users other than my Admin one, which I'm logged into. If what I'm saying sounds like an paradox, then you've finally got the gist of what I'm experiencing here. It doesn't seem like this should be possible, yet that's exactly what's happening.:mad:

But, it sounds very likely you acquired a virus, you would need to shut your pc down for at least 2 minutes, then boot from an anti virus CD, & run the program (Symantec,McAfee,Kapersky, etc.) , the other way to go is Windows Defender available for free on the Microsoft website, not quite as robust/complete as the other mentioned programs. The other issue is you might have had a voltage spike on bootup, that damaged the Master Boot Record. If you had Symantec & it Norton utilities you might still be able to do a repair, the challenge like with the 'restore point' option is typically you do need to create a known good point. If that doesn't work, the other last ditch effort & this is 'dicey' is to start the windows install again if your have the WIN 7 source Cd, it should ask if you to do a new install or a repair of the existing installation, the repair 'might' get back most of your files & data.

Good luck,
jerry

AV programs have historically caused me nothing but trouble. I'm 100% certain that this is not the result of a virus.

I did something, I don't know what I did, I watched it happen, I don't know how to undo it. I don't know how what I ended up with is even possible. I'm logged into a profile with no profile. I've placed a Bag of Holding into a Portable Hole. I've divided by zero.

In related news Amazon just sent me an email confirming that I've opted out of receiving emails from them.

Probably a long shot but you could try showing hidden folders (on the desktop). In XP the option is under Tools>Folder Options>View. Should be somewhere similar in 7.

That's what I would suggest as well. You may have somehow inadvertently set your desktop files/folders to be hidden. Just to check the obvious though, you did look in your Recycle Bin, right? Just checking... :D

Oh, next time.....GET A MAC!!! :p

if you rightclick on a blank spot on the desktop
look at the options closely
is there an UNDO DELETE or anything?
Nothing's been deleted.

it sounds like your user account is either deleted
or corrupted

try reading here
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows7/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile
It's not deleted. I'm logged into it. It's not corrupted, I can view it through the "back door" as I described above.

also,I would do a FREE online virus scan, such as
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

and maybe check into a malware program such as
malwarebytes
I'm pretty sure it's not anything like that, but it won't hurt to check when I finally go to bed.

Nothing. :(

Nothing has been deleted. And I'll get a Mac when I want to spend too much on something that's less useful.:D

un-checked the Right-Click->View->Show Desktop Icons ?

Wasn't unchecked, and it's not just the desktop stuff that's "misplaced".
