Went to the local knife store today and was interested in a S30V blade steel. He explained that CPM 440V and S30V are the same steels, one company had to change the steel name because of a trademark. Just wondering if this was true, or if this was a sales pitch...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that S60V used to be called CPM440V.

CPM 440-V and S30V ARE NOT THE SAME STEEL! No way at all. CMP 440-V and CMP 420-V had name changes. One is S60V and one is S90V, but I've always forgotten which name applies to which. But yes, S30V is a different steel.

Also, arent all CPM steels, S30V included, from the Crucible steel co.? If so, how can there be trademark issues? Knife store and gun shop salesman for that matter have never impressed me as having a whole lot of actual knowledge about what they sell, notice i said actual knowledge, they certainly THINK they know everything... :) I have heard some doozies from these guys, the best i can do is try very hard not to burst out laughing.
