What is your wilderness watch? Do you prefer analog or digital?

For backpacking, I really like my Timex Expedition. It's inexpensive, easy to read, lightweight, and the Indiglo feature is great at night.

I put this model on a NATO strap and have been very happy with it.

I actually don't have a watch right now. If anything, I consult my cell phone for time. When backpacking we rarely even bother to bring timepieces along, save for a small alarm clock to get us out of bed in the morning. We usually just go by the sun. Seriously. I guess somebody in the group usually has a watch or something, but we don't look at them much.

The watch I wear in the woods is the same watch I wear every day. My Timex Expedition. I love it. Bought it for 17.95 at Walmart in 2001, and it's still going strong. Had a new battery along the way.

If it goes belly up today, I won't even think about another brand watch, just buy another Timex Expedition.

Mine's dual-faced: both analog and digital.

I bought it in '04. Been only on a few short treks these past couple of years but it has gone thru tropical heat, sweat, water, mud and knocks. The bezel/case and straps had to be replaced last year though.

I'm a watch nut so I wear whichever one strikes my fancy at the time. It'll be analog and usually an automatic. I bought them to use so it doesn't bother me to wear an expensive watch in the woods.

Casio G-Shock "Riseman" (GW-9200). Solar battery charged and radio synchronized, with barometer, thermometer and altimeter.

Let me say a word about timex. I was fishing one day ,jigging spoons off the end of a boat dock. Apparently someone tipped the contents of their boat. I caught a rod and reel, a dipnet, and two watches a Timex and a Seiko. The Timex was still working and I wore it for awhile. The seiko was ruined.

I havent wore a watch in 7 months. Kinda liberating....

Ive owned all kinds though..... I really liked my Tissot T-touch. Been thinking on getting another, but I like not wearing a watch too much.

I have a different variant of the analog Timex Expedition for the outdoors, or when I don't want to risk damaging my fancy watch. The Timex is simple, cheap, reliable and would not disturb me much if it got lost or destroyed.

My other watch is a Citizen Eco Drive Calibre someting or other. It is pretty robust, but too expensive for me to beat up outside.

I could easily become a watch freak if I let myself . . .

Not to hijack, or to single you out as I've seen many people say the same thing on various forums, but I never understood that. It's like buying a nice knife and then not using it....which I have done in the past :o. A watch is a tool just like a knife and meant to be used. I wore what most would consider a very expensive watch (I'm not going to drop any names) while I was a grunt in the USMC precisely because I felt it was the best tool for the job and less likely to break down on me and it took everything I threw at it without damage.

Kind of like a lot of expencive things.

When Will Rogers was killed with Wiley Post both men were killed instantly. Wiley was a nut on watches and had a very expencive one on. Will on the other hand had a cheap tin dollar watch. Wiley posts high end watch was stopped at the time of the crash, while Will Rogers dollar tin piece was still ticking. The crash happened in front of witnesses who pulled both men from the wreck in minutes.

Maybe there is somthing to be said for cheap stuff like Timex's, mora's, Opinels, and machete's.

i use a casio pathfinder or a tissot t-touch. although i've been really wanting a seiko orange monser for some time now :D
