Hey guys ive had a syperco vg10 for a about a year. It was a blue handled standard straight blade non serrated. Always worked but it recently fell off my pocket and is gone. I was a little disappointed with the quality of the spyderco. The clip getting very loose and the blade to. I Tightened up the blade several times. So what would be a good pocket knife to buy without spending a fortune. Im open to all ideas and would also consider a multi tool. All suggestions are appreciated.

VG-10 was the steel type, not the model number/name of the knife. Not sure what model you could be talking about. Needing to tighten the blade isn't a quality issue. If you could tighten the blade, that means it had an adjustable pivot, and the ability to tighten it is the purpose of an adjustable pivot.

What's your price limit?

If your looking for a Multitool, I'd sugest a Leatherman, most of the new ones such as the wingman have a pocket clip, locking blade, and spring loaded pliers. All for $30ish.

I realize that vg10 is a steel type. It was just a basic spyderco, not sure of the model....and knives shouldnt get sloppy loose in under a year the clip was almost falling off. To me thats subpar quality.

My last leatherman seemed to have lower quality than the previous ones before it. Maybe it was just that one i dont know.

most of kershaws are really good knives even the ones made in china blades are really sharp and hold a good edge they have a modle called needs work made in usa for around 40 to 50 bucks also you should give spyderco one more try I have the spyderco persistence and cento fante and they are very good knives and the sharpest ive ever had and hold their edge very well their both under 60 bucks also victorinox swiss army are some of the best knives ive used

Well if you get the Leatherman wave with a clip it won't get loose because it hooks into the frame and lock bar. You could always get a torx bit set (about $10 on the net) and tighten the clip screws on any pocket knife when they become loose. A drop of loctite also helps them stay in place.

Clips are either held on by screws, or in the case of some (mostly older) Spydercos, bolts that you can tighten with a set of tools that costs you 50 cents (otherwise known as 2 quarters...or 2 dimes if you're on a budget).

Screws can come undone. Do you not own a screwdriver? Pivot screws can come loose. Screws loosen from rotation. Repeatedly opening/closing a knife causes rotation on the pivot. Eventually a pivot will need to be retightened. That's not sloppy. That's not sub-par quality. That's life.

I still want to know what knife it is you had. Because pretty much any knife you get that uses screws to tension the pivot and keep the pocket clip in place is going to disappoint your (unrealistic) expectations regardless of brand or how much you spend.

Ive had plenty of knives and none required as much maintenance as the spyderco. It was a good knife it was just more maintenance heavy which in my opinion is ridiculous . I have tons of tools i am an automotive technician I just dont like tightening it up every week. Yes i could have used loctite but I didnt I shouldnt have to. The darn thing should stay tight for more than a week and it wasnt just the blade every screw on it was always needing tightened. And it was very tiny odd sized torx bits. The ones this knife used for the clip were difficult to find.

I don't know then man. Every pocket clip I had came loose eventually without loctite. The only one that never did was my Sebenza because the clip is tightly inlayed into the frame and the screw heads "stick" to the titanium.

I still don't know what Spyderco you owned. As far as I'm aware, Spyderco has only made 2 knives with blue handles and straight blades. One was the Yojimbo, but that had S30V steel and the clip screws are phillips, and the other, which was in VG-10, was the 93mm Rescue, but it was mostly serrated with an inch or so of plain edge at the tip, and didn't have an adjustable pivot. I know, because I own both. So either your description is off, or you had some junk knockoff/counterfeit, or it wasn't a Spyderco.

Maybe a blue Delica or Endura? If straight means plain edge....

I believe he means Plain Edge by "Straight".

Anyways - As said before screws on knives do come loose, especially if they see a whole lot of use. Being an automotive technician, I'm sure you use yours a lot.
Loc-Tite is a good thing and some knives come from the factory with loc-tite applied. This adds extra security and helps get rid of some of the adjustments your knife may have needed without loc-tite.
Again, this isn't so much a Quality Control issue as it is a used tool loosening up a bit with use.

Spyderco makes some fine knives.

Leatherman makes really good multi-tools. The best on the market in my opinion. They have budget friendly options with excellent fit and finish. Though it you were going to carry it as your main tool, I may go for something more mid-high end as far as multi-tools go.

What are you really looking for in a knife?
I'd guess something that can be a workhorse, with good edge retention for extensive use and less sharpening needs, something with a decent grip.

Yeah, that's all I could come up with at the moment lol.

What size knife do you prefer?
What's your price limit?

It'll be easier to narrow it down with more information.

I think It was a delica. Was a good knife just high maintenance . I also prefer a little chunkier knife handle

Try a Manix. The lightweight version doesn't have any torx screws for you no adjust. Mine hasn't loosened in 10 months of use

Get a Benchmade Mini Griptilian then. You'll still have to keep an eye on the pivot though. And a bit of blue loctite goes a long way (it'll come loctited from the factory).

Check out the Spyderco Native.
It has black FRN handles(same material used for Delica handles), s30v steel which holds a great edge and makes a really good overall EDC steel, chunkier and beefier than the Delica, fits the hand like a glove, and can handle anything you throw at it. Comes up around $60 - $65 which is good for what you get.

Also, maybe check out a Kershaw Blur in s30v or Limited Edition Blur in CPM-154 in a Green, Purple, or Carbon Fiber handle. You can pick up Blems from KershawGuy for a really good price. The Blems don't come with the warranty but Kershaw still will send extra screws and hardware. The blem is normally some kind of little cosmetic blemish and most times can't even be found by the owner. If you don't like the assist(I especially don't on this model) you can take out the torsion bar and it makes a nice manual folder. =]

There are regular Kershaw Blurs as well but if you want something with a little different look and better steel, the limited editions are the way to go. If you want the better steel and standard Blur Handle, s30v is the way to go.

Good luck on your hunt.
