What to choose?

The pattern is set, it will be a peanut. One of the hardest patterns for any maker. The grinds, the size of the tang. Tony Bose told me I had better hang onto the one I had of his because he would never make another. He said big hands don't mix well with the small blades. I have several orders in with custom makers, but my name is not up quite yet, I am wondering what options to choose, Caps and bolsters, single blade or two, scale material, Most of them will be shelf queens and not be used. So what would you choose from some REALLY well known makers?
Thanks for the input,
Jim

I'm on Kerry's, Ken's, and Reese's list. I don't know what I'm going to request from any of them, but I guess I have some time to figure things out. I might have Kerry make me a single, spear point barlow. I'm going to ask Reese to make me a "Bose" pattern knife, probably a Lanny's Clip. I'm really excited about hearing from Ken, I can't think of another maker that is more open to building new and different patterns.

If I were ordering a custom peanut, I have some 'musts'.

It must have some nice figured stag. I love stag, always have.

It must be a good carbon steel. I don't care how much it costs, it's going in my pocket and I'm gonna use the heck out it. It's aknife, it's supposed to be a cutting tool, and I'll hold the maker to that. I don't believe in safe queens.

It has to have the standard two blades, clip and pen. I'm not sure, but there must be an unwritten law that all slip joint serpentine jacks have to have two blades.

Carl.

I think they should all have bolsters, but not necessarily caps. Shields are optional on a knife as small as a peanut.

Two blades are a must on a peanut.

Scales should be stag or bone.

I had no idea that you could get on a list without specifying the exact knife up front! That makes things a lot easier... or atleast delays the decision. ;)

Regarding your question... Hmmm... If makers are refusing to build them after the first one, you better make it a good one! ;) I'd like to see a "Trapper Nut" with a Wharncliffe secondary blade, stag or moose, a barehead and a fluted bolster.

Most every list I've been on I just told the maker what I was "thinking" about and then he got back to me when it was time to build the knife.

Thank you for the info, Rob!

Oh... I'd like to add a federal shield... or a peanut figural shield! :)

I've been on Kerry's list for two years and I've probably changed my mind a dozen times.

The only knife I knew 100% for sure exactly what I wanted when I ordered it was my Lanny's Clip from Brent Cramer.

I have been collecting peanuts for a long time, wore out several Case ones. Yes, you can wear one out or break a blade doing what it was not intended to be used for. But, no way am I going to use the one by Bob Cargill or Tony Bose to cut the nylon rope from straw bales out of my mower blades. I will use a larger knife and one a might cheaper. Ask Rick Menefee if I am a hard user, he said I wear them down through a lots of use and he loves it.

D2 is my choice of steel for the nut, now on to the window dressings.

Good luck, Jim. Wish I could help with the process but this is one of those times when I'll just hang back in the Peanut Gallery and watch the action develop.

Really been thinking hard about getting a peanut shield, but I think custom shields might be harder to get than the knife. I am thinking I better get back in back of the peanut gallery and get some more ideas. Some makers may be upset though. :)

I would get two blades, possibly carbon steel blades, no shield, and jigged bone or stag. I don't know enough about all the makers to give any advice there.

I think if I went for a custom peanut I would get one in MOP. If including a shield then something simple like a small oval. It should have 2 blades. Clip and either a pen or wharncliffe... I know the pen is classic but I like wharncliffe secondaries.

Hmmmmm??? Thinking about that.

I am into enigmas. Put an acorn shield on that 'nut. :).

Had to look that one up, that being said, I like the acorn shields. Hmmmmm???
Definitions of enigmas.
1.
a puzzling or inexplicable occurrence or situation: His disappearance is an enigma that has given rise to much speculation.
2.
a person of puzzling or contradictory character: To me he has always been an enigma, one minute completely insensitive, the next moved to tears.
3.
a saying, question, picture, etc., containing a hidden meaning; riddle.

Isn't an acorn a nut?

I would second the wharncliffe idea, but that's just me. Also, I would probably stay away from stag. It's probably heresy around these parts, but I think stag is a tad overdone on traditional knives. I tend prefer jigged bone. A nice Napanoch bone or Kerry chocolate bone would look great on a peanut.
