Hello! i know there are several threads about this but..nothing answers ALL of my questions. I recently built a propane forge out of a 5gal metal bucket and have 2" of kaowool on the inside walls. My question is: What is the best single coating to use? Im looking at either Mizzou, Kast-o-lite 30, or the classic satanite. not wanting to spend a lot of money so don't say ITC-100. I just want a coating that will last the longest and is easiest to apply/set out of the three i have mentioned. They are all roughly the same price.
Thanks!!!

I like plistex. Its pretty much like ITC 100 but instead of being 40 dollars a pint its 3 dollars a pint. Check out Wayne Coe. Its nearly exactly the same, from what i read it is about 95 percent as effective as ITC

Thanks for the reply. i looked into plistix but am looking for something more tough. Plistix is used for more of a topcoat on top of the satanite etc. Im just wondering what coat would be best for the base layer

Base layer most people use satanite. Personally i just set up a base from a pice of fire brick at the bottem of my forge because i didnt want to deal with it.

You want at least a coat of satanite. Those ceramic fibers are nasty little critters and you want to seal them in, so you don't take the chance of breathing them.

so im getting that satanite is my best bet..i had heard that mizzou or kast-o-lite does the same thing as satanite but is much stronger and wouldnt need patching regularly like the satanite. Is that true or will satanite hold up just fine? also is 5lbs enough for a small forge 7" diameter and 12" deep? Thanks so much for the replies guys!!

I just did a forge around that size (12" dia x 14" outside dimensions with 2" of ceramic blanket) with 5lb of Satanite. I made the first coat a little more runny, and painted it on while I had the end off the forge so it would soak in. (Spray the blanket liberally with water first).

Remaining coats I made a little thicker and rubbed it on with my fingers. Easier than trying to use a brush inside the confined area, even after I cut the handle off it.

All up, I got four coats and a little left over for patching out of the 5lb.

Fire brick on the floor and another level with the door on the outside, the only area that should see much abuse is the door area.

I did also coat with ITC-100. (Wish I had heard about Plistix though!)

Coat with satanite to about 1/4"-3/8", cure and fire it, patch any cracks, fire again. Paint with a thin layer of ITC-100. Cure and fire again. This will give a robust and very efficient forge lining.
