What to do after stripping [prevent corrosion under the scales]

Hi folks,

I need strip the handle part of an Ontario RTAK II. Since 1095 is probably very prone to rust I really would like to at least treat the part underneath the micarta scales to protect it from rusting. What would you do? Is gluing the only reasonable solution? I thought of using some grease or a thin coat of polyurethane...but I'm not sure if that's the way to go. Should I etch the steel because the patina will protect the metal from rusting?

Your thoughts are appreciated!!!

Cheers,

plain mineral oil you can get in the pharmacie.
It is edible and protects from rust.
You could also use renaisance wax, but it will have to be reapplied after use.

I use RemOil for everyday maintenance and Birchwood Casey Barricade for long term storage/ under scales etc.

Barricade is an oil and it has a very strong smell, similar to surplus military weapons oil I used to buy in the 70's. It might kill you, but your knives won't rust.

It will take millennia for it to rust through. The rust will not hold on the surfaces touched/brushed when the knife is used. As for the places you can not see and can not easily clean: just let them be. It does not do any harm and is a result of regular usage.

thanks guys. has anybody of you ever tried to protect the visible part of the steel within handle section? i have some problems with my stripped rtak II...because of hand sweat i get rust on the steel which bothers me. i thought about using some varnish to avoid rust..any of you guys ever tried that? i appreciate your ideas.

Super simple. Take the scales off, tape the blade, and put a coat or two of clear spray lacquer on the tang. Then after drying just slap it back together and you're good. :)
