Ok fellas, I am needing to tap you vast opinion banks, valuing them as I do. I picked up a 3rd ver 4th var on the auction site and it came yesterday. The description pretty much said it was used but in good condition, no chips in blade, good snap and so forth. The pics were all somewhat elongated angles to some extent, but I wasnt suspicious. It looked like a spa to the blade and some bolster buff and I'd have a bute.

Here is the description: http://www.ebay.com/itm/330869093494?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Here's a Clean Buck Hunting Knife...Made In USA...It's 8 1/4" Long Over All...There's No Cracks In Wood Handle...No Splits...No Repairs...Tight Brass Rivets...No Chips In Blade...It's Tight...No Blade Wiggly...It Has Good Blade Snap...Lot's of Brass...Locking Back...It's Heavy and Clean In & Out...Includes the Buck Leather Case...Good Top Snap...Case Has Used Look...Starting Price...$20.00 and Free Shipping In USA...Thanks for looking...

I open it up last night to find it just as expected, except the blade has been reprofiled and is 1/4-5/16" short.

I'm torn as 3rd 4ths arent easy to come by so should I send it back, keep it and have a spa or keep it and have it rebladed?

Appreciate your input

Kev, if it were me (and it's not), I'd send it back for a refund. I'd insist that the seller compensate you for the shipping back to them also. I know that according to eBay policy YOU are supposed to have to pay the shipping on returns, but I've yet to have to do so. The simple mention of negative feedback and poor star ratings usually get that taken care of in a hurry. ;)

Thanks Dave,

I just added the description to my text, the more I look, the more I am leaning toward your suggestion.

The "no repairs" is a reason I would send it back for a refund. You didn't buy it to get a new blade.

In a related question for you -- I've seen quite a few knives on that auction site lately that are listed as like new, never sharpened, never carried, etc. when they are clearly scratched up, broken tip, blade covered with marks from a sharpening stone or other such use. Do you send the seller a message or just stay away?

I can never tell if it is just ignorance about what they are selling or intentional misrepresentation.

I personally have found that sending a message to someone that would advertise an obviously used knife as new is usually a waste of youre time. I have seen date errors and simple mistakes, where the seller just didnt know.... They are worth a message and are usually very appreciative.

Yeah, my head/wallet agree with Dave and ed, but my heart says little money spent, how often do I see a 3rd 4th? Thats why I'm conflicted. I was sooooooooo disappointed last night when I opened it and found it short. Everything else is correct-great snap, wood and bolsters in spa-able condition, sheath is in very nice supple shape.

That being said, as I check his other listings, I dont see any of those angled shots, which gives me the impression that he knew exactly what he was doing and covered up the short blade......which pi**es me off.

If you have concluded that he knew what he was doing, I'd send it right back and ask for shipping included. That elongated photography looks very suspicious now that you describe the blade and I go back. Initially, it just looks like bad photography until you know why.

Ship that sucker back Kevin, sooner or later you'll find a nice one.Just my opinion, pal.:)

Yeah, I'm with skyhorse. If you keep it and do get it rebladed, what do you have? Not a real collectable in my opinion. I have a similar old 110 that was rebladed and also a 112. I simply consider them in the user catagory since they aren't the original blades.

Thanks for the opinions boys, I have decided to send it back. I have contacted the seller.

Dave thats what I was thinking, I'd have a rebladed old knife-nothing special. If the body was perfect, I'd think about a Dammy blade but the bolsters and wood arent in the condition(even after spa) to warranty that. Plus it would be another 100 bucks to get done.

Tom, I hope youre right-I know they're out there and I was just dreaming of stealing one for under 30 bucks. :)

I just went and checked out the completed knife auctions of this seller. There are quite a few knives and the one Fritz bought is the ONLY one I found that didn't have a "head on" view of the blade or blades. Seems a bit suspicious to me. Did the seller know that showing the straight on view of the blade would tip some buyers off that it was reprofiled?

I should have been suspicious, and if it was only the top pics I would have been. I thought that the two left pics of row 2 were good enough to go ahead and buy. I was wrong:o I actually had set a bid limit of $40 but no one outbid me. I guess they knew better.

Naww, I bid on and won a nice old long pull 301 last year only to discover that the blade had been shortened about 1/4". I should have spotted that right off, but I didn't. Lucky for me, when I asked Joe if the new blades would fit the old two spring knives, he said no but to send it in anyway. He managed to come up with the correct blade (old style) for it and they actually fixed it under warranty!

Joe's the best. I thought about asking him, but I didnt figger there would be a chance of and inverted 2 line just laying around.
