My son works as a machinist, and they just got rid of one of their power hacksaws. He brought home the remaining blades. They are Starrett BS 1410-6, bimetal HSS blades, 14.5" long, 1 5/16" wide, 1/16" thick.

I have never had the opportunity of using a knife with M2 blade, which I assume the HSS means. Anyone have suggestions on how I can turn these into usable blades? I have 10 of them. I would also be interested in knowing how much of the width is M2, since it is bimetal with HSS edge.

bi metal are not suitable for blades. if i am not mistaken, its merely the tooth thats m2

I have one for shark and ray and other fish cleaning chore. it cuts them easily. Some knives gets blunt on the skin very quickly.

I had a few knives for my gf to compare and she says theres no comparison.

Bimetal wont work, but its interesting to note that during WWII 90,000 Murphy Combat knives were made for the troops, mostly using worn out power hack saw blades.

Unfortunately, everyone's right. The really big ones, 24 inches long, 0.1 inch thick, are quite good for knives, but they are H2 MSS all the way through, about 65 - 66 HRC.

I'll bet a careful fellow could grind a nice sheepsfoot or possibly a Wharncliff knife from a bimetal power hacksaw blade, especially if you were willing to let some of the profile of the teeth remain. Think of them as sort of a 'hillbilly serration'. :)
