What to do with a fake spyderco?

MOD IT:D

I hate fake knives like everyone else on this forum, but this isn't a thread about knife politics. I just wanted to share my story about my counterfeit knife and how I made it something more special.

So I received a "southard" for my b-day from my Mom earlier this month and I was under the impression that it was a legit spyderco. It came in a legit spyderco box and everything; zero blade play, rides on bearings, the whole deal..Well, sorta...

Then I came across a thread on fake spydercos and spotting the differences, and someone showed a fake southard. That's when I noticed mine was fake. So I asked my mom where she got it at and she said eBay, so we looked for the seller info but it was no longer listed...go figure:mad: now I'm stuck with a fake southard...

My Mom didn't know, she knows nothing about knives except the fact I wanted a southard really bad. She thought it was just a good deal...for $60 lol. She now knows the truth.

But since this knife was a gift from ma, I wanted to make myself like it despite it being fake. That's when I had a vision...linen micarta:cool:

A few hours with a dremel and a drill and this is my results. The cool thing, is when I get a real southard I can just put these on there!!! That's partially why I did this, so don't think I'm over here worshiping this fake knife lol. I just really like the results a whole lot and wanted to share here.

So if you end up with a fake somehow, don't throw it into the pits of hell! Mod it, then buy the real deal. It's really good practice and you don't have to feel bad about ruining a genuine spyderco.

Thanks guys,

Just don't kill me for having a fake:o...This was just for fun

Hey man, not gonna kill ya. You gotta make the best with what you got. Unfortunately you got a fake.....so hey. Nice job on the mod.

No better way to practice making scales, and that one looks pretty darn good.

Stupid tools on ebay peddling fakes makes me sick.

I love micarta, and those are great looking scales. Good job
Now please get them off of that knife and see how good you are with a hammer.
Then we'll want pics:p

I would have put it to a "hard use" test. ;)

I stabbed a lot of logs with it when I found out it was fake to test the tip and it held up just fine. Then I batoned some vines about 2"-2.5" thick and the edge was pretty beat but lockup was still solid w/no blade play.

It takes a great edge, but doesn't hold up like some premium steels like D2 or 154cm, id say it's close to aus8 in performance, who really knows though...it's fine for simple tasks, but I sure wouldn't take it camping or something.

But honestly, despite it being fake, I've seen knives in this same price range ($60) that perform much worse. But that doesn't mean I'll be buying fakes anytime soon:)

Micarta is my personal fav:thumbup:
Once my new zt comes in my mailbox I'm getting a southard ASAP.
I've been thinking about making a knife too, I've got down basic handle making and also anodizing, so expect to see more creations from me in the future since this was my first attempt :D

I like your scale, it looks great. Eventually it will look great on a real Southard if you get your hands on one. The real thing is a big step up from the fake, but the fakes I've handled were actually pretty solid knives considering what they're sold for and it's not like you intentionally bought it. I'd suggest you counsel your mother on the veracity of that old truism "if it seems too good to be true" and then use and abuse the fake until you can get the real thing.

I would not normally condone bat toning a log with a folding knife,in this case I'd make an acceptation.

Come on guys, it was a gift from his Mom. If it were me, I would get a real one and transfer the great looking scales you made onto the real one. I would then put the gifted one away. You'll have the "gift" from Mom, and have the real one to use. Mom's aren't around forever, there will be a time when that knife, even a fake, will mean something to you.

BTW, nice job on the scales. :)
