What To Do With A WTC Knife

Help me out here, guys.
I bought the World Trade Center knife from Spyderco.
I felt good about the purchase and I was happy to help out the cause.

Now, what do I do with the knife?
All it has done is sit on my desk in it's box.

I can't use it because the ball-bearing is too darn small. I can open the knife just fine and it feels great in my hand.
But I just can't close it. It takes a concentrated effort to squeeze my finger tips into the slot to reach the ball and push it against the spring to close the knife.
I have 15+ Spydies and they all get used regularly, but not the WTC.

What should I do with it?

My suggestion is to just keep it in its' box as a commemorative display. As much as you'd like to carry it, you should keep in mind that it is a VERY unique piece. If you do carry it, I recommend that it just be a conversation piece and you bring along one of your 'regulars' for any cutting chores.

I feel the same way about my Bladeforums SpyderHawk PE that I'd like to carry, but it is unique in that for one, PE SpyderHawks w/blue FRN handles aren't a dime a dozen and two, the SpyderHawk has been discontinued(at least to my knowledge). I intend on keeping mine in mint condition. ;)

I dont use mine, it reminds me of my friend John D'Allara and all the other people that went in when everyone was trying to get out. It's a reminder that America still has brave people willing to put it on the line for their fellow man everyday. It's also a piece of history you can hand down later on with the WTC steel in the handle. I printed out the story behind the knife and steel and keep it with the knife.

Get the D'Allara if you want to have a user.
Just my opinion.

I have #404 in the WTC line-up. It was a 10th wedding anniversary gift from my wife before I joined The Fire Department. I wore it on 9/11 as we dedicated our 9/11 memorial and I will continue to wear it every 9/11 in honor of those lives lost. I got a regular D'Allara for everyday use. At all other times, the WTC is in the beautiful display box in my living room.

spydercos are made to be used.

what better tribute to the people who died than to use an implement created in their honor?

of course, i'm no real collector.

Two schools of thought.

Use it, like the man said, Spydercos are for use and using it can be a tribute; or

Save it as a keepsake, do not carry or use it. I suspect if I had one of the WTCs or one of the anniversary Delicas I'd never use them. (I am a collector)

If you can afford it, consider donating it to your local museum or a fire department or police department (only if they'll keep it in display.) Its like you are still saving it while letting others enjoy it too.

Yep, I'm with DVDFLNN on this...The WTC will come out on each Sept 11 for the day, then it goes back into it's display box.

The rest of the time, I'll be carrying the D'Allara (which I find is an excellent personal choice for a duty knife).
