Hey Forumites!!! It looks like it's gonna be a couple more months before the pass around bowie is finished. I thought now might be a good time to ask you folks what you think we should do with the funds raised in it's raffle. Originally we talked about just donating the money to the forums, but I would like to hear your thoughts. If we raised enough to cover the costs of a Blade Forums sponsored knife show, would that be something you think we could do? . Take care! Michael

Personally, I think you guys should just give me the knife and be done with the whole mess!!!!!!

To be quite honest, I think it would only be ethical to donate a portion of the proceeds to BladeForums.com. If it wasn't for this place, the project probably wouldn't have happened, and, in the event that it did, there probably wouldn't have been nearly as much interest in it as there is....

As far as the rest of the money raised.... Well, IMHO, it should definitely be donated to some organization that has to do with knives... Perhaps the AKTI, or, maybe donate the rest to a Boyscout Troop, with the understanding that the leaders would use the money to purchase SAK's for children who cannot afford them, and that they teach them the proper way to handle/sharpen/care for a knife.... As far as that goes, I am a small knife dealer, and if you could find a Scout Leader, or anyone else, who has the time to spend teaching children about knives and how to properly care for them, I will let them have the knives at my cost.... Hell, I even donate a few more knives myself.... I'm quite certain there are other dealers/people that would be willing to do the same!

Just my two cents!

I don't think I heard about this.... Anyone want to clue me in on the raffle?

Thanks,
Shawn

Wow! How'd I miss that thread? What a cool idea!

Depends on how much money you think you'll get from it but seems like the Makers who donated their time should pick a Charity which they would like to support and go that route. I like the BSA idea cause it will be a jumping off point to promote greater responsibility/knife ownership. Maybe organizing a BF Blade Show 'at which' the raffle winner will be announced would be something to consider. Shouldn't be too hard to get something like that together. Hardest thing would be 'where'?!

How are you going to sell it? Something that might be cool to go with the knife is a little booklet with a paragraph from each Maker involved stating something about their experience making this knife or just some general statement about blades they'd like to make then include sig/autographs.

Maybe the best way to include BF would be to use their name in the name of the knife? That type of marketing tool and the conversations/contacts it could generate would be priceless!

I definitely want to be involved when this thing comes up for raffle! Sounds awesome!

Mike, just to clear up a point, when you say 'Raffel' do you mean selling chances to win, or is there a set price on the knife, and the winner has to pay that price?

Hey, it's not easy being the dumbest kid on the block.

Phil, if the rest of the folks involved don't mind, I'd like to run the raffle. It was suggested that we sell tickets for $5 a pop. If you guys let me run it, I figure I'd start it about a week after I got the finished bowie so I could post pictures and give everyone plenty of time to see it and decide. Then sell tickets for the next month, and either have the drawing like Emanym said, at a Blade Forums knife show, or I could have my Mom draw the ticket and just post the winner. I thought to just have people send a postal money order for the amount they want to buy and send one 3 by 5 card with their name, forums name, address and phone number on it for each entry. When they arrive, I'll count the cards and make sure the number jibes with the amount sent, fold the cards in half and throw em in a box or bag, and put the money orders in a safe till the ticket sales ends. Then cash the money orders and let everyone know the number of tickets sold and the total rasied.
*********************************************Heres one thing that needs to be settled before the thing gets started. Do you Forumites think the people involved in making the knife should be allowed to buy any raffle tickets??? If you'd prefer me not to buy tickets if I end up running the thing, I understand 100%. Please let us know how you feel on this subject!*********************************************

Shawn, theres an info sheet traveling with the blade and each person that works on it is supposed to be putting their name, and any pertinent info on it. When I get it back finished, I'll take the info to a printing shop and have a real nice certificate of origin and ownership made to go with the bowie.

Donating some money to Bladeforums sounds great, for the reasons mentioned. As for the rest of the money, I have no idea!!! I could use a Bader though! I think you makers involved should decide together. I am fine with all those involved in the project buying entries as well. Presidential campaign, no way. Pass around bowie, we're all knife nuts and trustworthy folks. But if ya try and cheat us Michael we'll come find ya!! My kukri will be honed to a razor edge for the drawing!

P.S. I must win! I saw the grind and the file work and fell in love

I for one have no problem with you buying as many tickets as you want, however I've got a real problem with you winning.

Come to think of it I'd have a real problem with anyone winning this knife, except me.

I'd like to see part of the proceeds go to BladeForums. I'd also like to see some of the money go to equipment for some of the new makers here. Just as an idea as to which new maker should win new knifemaking equipment, why don't you post the specs on the bowie, have everyone who is interested make a knife to those specs and send them to L6 for judging, the winner gets new equipment, then we have a raffle on that knife, and L6 gets to keep the others. It's a Win-Win-Win situation. Aren't you glad I'm using this brain for good and not evil?

cuz everybody should have a blade

I think my wife would be rather annoyed if we couldn't buy tickets. She's fallen in love with the blade. I like the idea of buying equipment for a newbie, though. Especially if I'm the newbie. :> I still think the bulk or all should go to BF, though. I guess it would depend on how much is raised.
