The past few threads on here regarding self reliance and doing alot with a little have been interesting, specially after what I was told today. I was told at work that I would not be able to carry my Leatherman anymore. I carry it on my belt in a sheath, since it is too heavy for pocket carry, and for looks and flexability, they want our belts to be free of anything. Plus we put our mic packs on our belts during shows, and the sheaths usually get in the way. So now I am in a bit of a quandry. Not only does my Leatherman have immense sentimental value (it was given to me by my wife when we were dating), but I actually use it quite often. The pliers, drivers, and file...... all are used quite often. Well, now it looks like that will be over, at least at work. What shall I do? Hmmm. Well, I don't have that round driver thing on my keychain, but I DO have a Leatherman Squirt. It's a small, keychain tool. It is a mini multitool, complete with small pliers, knife, file, and various size drivers, flat head and phillips, as well as an awl and bottle opener. Nothing for any BIG jobs, but more then adequate for daily duties. Plus, I have my Peanut with me, to handle my cutting chores. I guess I can carry one of my SAKs with me for security sake, but..... no. I think as an experiment, I am going to just MAKE DO with my Peanut and Squirt. If it was good enough for our fathers, it should be good enough for me. This is going to be an interesting journey.

I think we should take advantage of all tools that we can carry. There are some really good way to rig a LM. I would talk to some sheath makers and see if you can't rig you a rig that would do you right. Maybe like a static cord so you can carry the LM in the pocket but keep the weight on the belt.

Well, I know you feel it is too heavy for pocket carry, but have you considered a pocket sheath? It might change the feel for you. You might also consider an inside the waist band sheath. Another thought would be a horizontal sheath worn in front or small of the back. Frankly, if I used it regularly as you seem to, I would carry it. I have not granted my employer the right to tell me not to. If it means moving on, I'll do that. But, I'm old and grouchy when folks try to tell me how to live my life.

Another one for this method. It is well hidden as it looks like part of the belt. If you dont have a sheath for one, let me know what modle you have, and I might have an extra one I can send you (if this method of carry interests you).

Best of luck,
John

What kind of leatherman is it? I have the Wave and the leather sheath that came with it can be used for horizontal and vertical carry. I just discovered this the other day and have been carrying horizontal ever since.

What the heck is a belt for if you can't put stuff on it?!?! Your employer uses the argument that it gets in the way when you need to put on one of there bags, so why can't you just move the LM to a different spot on your belt? A leatherman isn't a tool that would greatly suffer from a slow retrieval, so you could even put it on your left side, or small of back, or front right or front left. I hang sheetrock and have to were a big set of tool bags and my leatherman doesn't get in the way. Then again, our tool bags are on there own belt, so they just go right over the LM.

I also can understand the sentimental value, my wife got me my leatherman wave for christmas, and the only time it's not on my belt is when I get dressed up. The wave replaced the original style LM that I had for some 12 years, leathermans are just hecka handy for everyday life, and the plyers are so convenient when fishing. My wife has hinted about wanting a leatherman for fishing, 'cause she's always borrowing mine, so I'm thinking of getting her a red squirt p4.
