I just received a Buck 110 with 2 dots on each side of the 110 on the blade tang. This friend of mine had it for years but had thrown it aside in his desk because he had snapped the tip off. Was wondering if I should mail it to the Buck factory for repair(spa treatment?) or just grind the tip down and use it?
Sorry I know, I don't like grinding tipped knives down either.
Just looking for some advice, Thanks....................Paul:confused:

Send it back to Buck for reblade $10, or send it to Eric(arksknives) or Leroy(triple R knives) for a new blade and some custom work.

I just got a 2 dot 110 from a pawn shop that someone reground after breaking the tip that will go for rehab (reblade+spa treatment). Also a 2 dot 112 and a 4 dot 110 that just need cleaning.

the problem with short tips is that they freqently stick up above the liner and catch the tip of your finger when fondling in pocket.

Very true, Fritz. Been there done that!!

Yeah I got an '88 with probably the 2 nicest slabs of Macassar of any 110 Ive handled, but the tip is short and sticks up otherwise I'd just carry it as it is. I am leaning toward Erics 486 drop point with thumbstud blade mod. Just gotta stop buying knives so I have some cash to have it done.

Thanks for the answers so far guys, appreciate the input. Do I just mail it to them with the $10 m.o./check and a little note then? Will it still be the 2 dot blade or a new blade?

I'd call them first before sending it for instructions. You will get a new blade but not a 2 dot. I sent in an old 112 with a broken blade and got a new 2009 blade in it.

Plum is correct. You won't get a 440C blade back, just a standard current issue
420HC.
If you want that 440C, cruise pawn shops and antique stores for knife with a 440C to cannibalize if you want to keep the original scales & handle. Then have one of the forum craftsmen do the switch. If there is nothing special in the scales or handle, it's not worth bothering. Just grind it and keep it as a beater. (That's what I'd do, at least.)

Eric's 486 version is sweet if you go that way! Not a bad price either if you stick with the stock handle material and just do the blade swap. I really like mine!

Guys his knife has a 4 dot blade of 425 steel . I think Leroy may have some of those . May be able to get close . DM

yes if a tip is to be reground one needs to do it the hard way
from the back side down to the exisating edge
this will keep the tip inside the liner when closed;)
yes unless you take pains to redo the the curve of the back side clip,
will be off and have a two curve profile
but ... to do it right is much better and better looking
and it dont show as much :D
much easier to have leory or eric drop in a 486 drop point and have a unique knife!

After looking at this poor thing for the past few days, and weighing all the good suggestions here, I think I'll go with wolfdog's suggestion. I'll grind it down and use it as beater. There is nothing special in the handle or bolsters, and they are banged up too. I'd rather use my money and get a new 110 or another nice Buck. I'll post some photos of this mess soon. Thanks everyone.
