What to get next? Advice on a smaller Scandi

To all of the Scandi fans,

I have never had or used a knife with a Scandi grind and i think it is about time I tried one out. I am looking for something that has a grip around the same size or tad larger that the EDK. I will be using it for carving and small tinder prep, and maybe some EDC use.

I have read some of the stuff I could find around here on the various models but now that we have some new ones in the mix I would like to get some opinions.

I have narrowed the list down to these Scandi models;

Bushcraft Karda
Hiking Buddy
EDC
Bushcraft Jr
Bushcraft Cub
Patch

Did I miss anything? I would like to try an Arete bu I think it may be bigger than I am looking for.

Right now I am leaning towards the Hiking Buddy or the Bushcraft Cub.

If anyone has a few of these and has some user experience I would love to hear about it.

Cheers

esquire

I am not sold on the grip on that one. It sure looks nice but it is more of a 3 finger right? The end of the handle on the top where it comes up a bit looks like it would dig into the hand a bit.

Is it more comfy than it looks?

You need a hiking buddy for sure

Yes the esquire is larger than it appears and very comfy
Even with my big paws it works!

Very good to know thanks. Other than an EDK my two small fixies are non Fiddlebacks, a BRKT Woodland and Little Creek. If the Esquire falls somewhere between those two I think it may work.

I really want to like the Esquire, the blade shape looks just right for a lot of things.

So, since you have an EDK you don't want to consider one of them for a small scandi? That is what I have and it is a great little knife.

I like the EDK quite a bit, I thought it would be fun to try a profile I don't have. Now if the right Bushcraft Karda came out of hiding I would have a hard time resisting :D

I have a scandi esquire and its the bees knees. very capable and very robust little knife. I take it with me hiking, more than i do my hiking buddy.

The Patch is a profile that's just screaming to be in a scandi. Hiking Buddy works really well as one also. I think the shorter profile blades are best for a scandi grind. If it's too tall, all that extra steel just gets in the way.

EDK, BCK would both be good as well.

Esquire is a little shorter on the handle than the others, but is great for a scandi profile as well.

You are 100% correct.

Nice photo thanks! It is a good straight on shot, that puts things in perspective.

I love my Scandi Hiking Buddy. For my size hands, average large, it's the smallest handle size that permits me to comfortably use the scandi grind in firm and controlled woodworking grips/cuts. I would like to try a scandi Bushcraft Karda as I think that would be a lot of fun.

To all of the Scandi fans,

I have narrowed the list down to these Scandi models;

Bushcraft Karda
Hiking Buddy
EDC
Bushcraft Jr
Bushcraft Cub
Patch

Since there's only been 2 Bushcraft Jr sold to date and neither were scandi, I'd lean toward the Hiking Buddy as that handle family is the most comfortable to me. That said, I'd love to acquire and try a BC Jr in scandi if ever available.

I have a patch and hiking buddy in scandi. Unless you really want the tip to be centered I would go patch.
The handle on my patch is fuller. The hiking buddy handle is slimmer. The patch handle is also more neural.
The hiking buddy has that little point at the butt of the handle. This sometimes digs my palm in a modified chest lever grip I use for carving.
This is not a common grip. I have not seen it used much. So it would not be a problem for most.
It may be too big but I have a scandi recluse that is perfection. Since you mentioned the arete.
Good luck.
P.S. Have you thought about a cheaper scandi to try out first to see if you like. Very different form a convex.

I haven't tried any of the new models, but out of the old models I'd go with a Patch or BCK. Then Hiking Buddy. EDCII has the fullest grip, but I just don't know how I feel about a scandi EDCII. EDK is shorter than I would like. Esquire is just a no go for me based on specs and appearance.

That is not a bad idea but definitely not my style :) I figure I could always trade or sell it if I really don't like it.

I settled on a scandi a little while back and I figured I would share. I ended up with a Ladyfinger of all things :) She is a bit bigger than I had initially been looking for but she is a perfect fit. The handle is awesome to hold and the blade length and depth is very useful. I'll be taking her on my next camping trip, until then she will see some fire pit kindling duty as well as some yard work chores.

She just came back form the shop after a re-stamping and sharpening. Thanks to Ken, Allen, and Andy, she looks great!
