Looking to buy a nice belt grinder. I wanted to know if the plans you can buy and "build your own" are any good, and if they are, where to look for em. If not, what should I look into that won't cost me an arm and a leg? What type of grinder motor should I be looking for (high speed, variable speed, etc.). Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you guys soon.

What ever type of grinder you get, DIY or factory made, a 2 X 72 Variable speed grinder is the way to go. I would recommend getting the best quality grinder you can afford. The cost of a 2 X 72 Variable speed grinder with a 10 inch contact wheel will pay for itself in many ways. The grinder is at the center of many of the tasks needed to make a stock removal knife or a forged blade.
I use a KMG 2 X72 variable speed grinder and I have found it to be reliable, sturdy and a smooth operator that allows for great control..

I've decided on the KMG clone. Looks like it will do everything I want it to and more. Should I try to find a motor from a real KMG to go with it?

That motor is nothing special.

You can buy used motors at large discounts.

I highly recommend Variable speed with a VFD, are you planning on vfd, or step pulleys?

VFD seems like the better option, but then again I've never used step pulleys,

I agree that VFD is the better option

Then when looking for a used motor , you need to look for

Motor
3 phase
220vac
1.5 HP
motor,
TEFC,
frame 56

RPM is up to you many are happy with a 1700 RPM running at double speed.
Make sure it has a footed base for the KMG and NWG, or a C flange face mount for Bader, Bee, Wilton and GIB styles.
I get them on ebay, even with paying $80 for shipping to Canada I save $$$ on a used motor.

The 1.5 HP combination is the most common, as reported by Rob Frink
It allows you to plug into any 110vac, 15 amp outlet.
A 2 HP motor requires a 220vac input.

have a look at this modification That uses a 56C frame
